I own an HP Envy dv6 Notebook PC, MOdel No.2CE243OCYT.  It has an Atheros AR9485 802.11 b:g:n WiFi adapter. There is an HP update for that adapter, but when I updated it, I was unable to connect to the internet. I realize that this WiFi adapter is only for 2.5G. I had to refresh my laptop, then I had internet access again. I have not tried that driver update again, but TWC just updated my Cable modem to dual band using the 2.5G and 5G bands.

I am afraid to install the Atheros update in my lapotop again because I don't want to go thtough the hassle of re-installing all my software pd[rograms again.

Is there a dual band WiFi adapter that HP recommends, and is it easy to install?

Thanks

Notebooks are as you custom order them or purchase them as ready to ship models. They are not generally considered to be upgradeable at all. You can upgrade desktop PCs generally as much as the motherboard platform and BIOS permit.

HP does not as far as I know make any recommendataions regarding notebooks and usb adapters.

Just do a search online with Googl, Bing or your favoriteb search engine for major brands such as ASUS, Linksys and Netgear. Check out the reviews of the candidates you find and make sure that they include drivers for the operating system that you have in your notebook. NewEgg.com is a good website to do csome comparison shopping.

IF you want nextgen wifi features in the usb adapter and happen to have a nextgen router with 802.11ac  2.4 ghz and 5 ghz capabilities, then search for one that many people recommend.

Updating the internal wifi adapter is not recommended for the average notebook owner. Notebooks are not open architecture like desktop PCs. Unless you mod your notebook, then you are stuck with the antenna configuration that your notebook already has and that is a seriously limiting factor when considering an upgrade.

If you want to use the next generation wireless (802.11ac) with 5 Ghz, then consider a usb adapter.

Otherwise you are far better off choosing a notebook that already has the wireless capability that you want preinstalled and tested at the factory.
