Recently had same issue as in topic.
Just want to share my experience.
Laptop HP g6-2379sr
Ralink R3290 wifi adapter
Windows server 2008 R2 ( drivers as Win7 x64)
I've tried different drivers from HP  compatible models
and all of the drivers available at http://www.station-drivers.com/index.php/10-drivers/54-ralink
I got adapter speed 150Mb/s (mode n) only on these:
"ralink_2860_5.0.33.1(www . station-drivers . com).exe"
"ralink_2860_5.0.34.0(www . station-drivers . com).exe"
They are different by size but after installation show the same driver's version - 5.0.3.0(24/08/2012).

Yes, drivers inside are older than the actual name, but it works.

And on that site they both are shown as Version "5.0.33.1"

Sorry for my bad English.

For full support of the adapter in the range of 802.11 "n" need to change the registry setting that restricts work only under the protocols 802.11 "b, g".

- Registry branch:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ ControlSet001 \ Control \ Class \ {4d36e972-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} \ 0014

- Meaning: WirelessMode (may be a different number in the range 0000-0021) in my case 0014

By default, the key "3", which in turn means that the protocol is "a, b, g".

If you change the value to "7" - adapter should work with protocols "g, n".

Reboot the PC.
