And how have you verified that it is gen 1 x 4? I just double checked my own laptop (not a Ryzen) with Samsung Magician and it comes up gen 3 x 4 on my Evo 970. I can't imagine desiging a motherboard in 2018 with a 4 lane PCIe/M.2 slot but only 1st gen PCIe bus?? The PCIe generation would be dictated by the motherboard chipset, right? So if anything its a problem with AMD drivers or hardware and not drivers or firmware for the M.2. I do understand there have had to be some driver updates issued for Ryzen systems as there are other performance issues needing to be addressed, but this is the first I have heard of this one.

I had a thought last night and got up to test it first thing this morning. I made no other changes to my laptop other than plugging it in.  Problem solved, it tested in crystal disk as expected. Although, it's not all fully understood. I checked all of and my settings in the power management options and all were set to max performance. PCIE link power state management was off. I can find nothing to account for the performance throttling when on battery power. I think it's either built in to the 2700u firmware/driver or something is set in the BIOS that is not able to be seen in windows. No matter what I do Magician always shows 1x4 mode and HWiNFO64 always shows that it's running in 3x4 mode. It's a mystery to me, but at least it works as advertised when plugged in. Hope this helps anyone who's interested. Makes me think that the OEM sk hynix drive was just suffering from the stuttering with the same power throttling issues. Oh well, at least it's a bigger drive.
