Just had my Spectre evaluated (see link for my original post/problem)
The tech pinpointed the problem to a visibly worn out monitor connecting cable which he attributes to the 360 hinge (although I have rarely used the laptop in tablet mode/flipped). Damage to the screen seems permanent however.
Not sure if that's all there is to the story, but it would at least explain why so many people are reporting the problem across different models with the hinge.

I struggle to think that it’s the display cable as moving the hinge back and forth doesn’t seem to change anything. If it was a connection/cable issue you would be able to see it worsen or improve as you moved the hinge back and forth.
My best guess is that after some thermal wear something on the display stops communicating with the video or backlight controller properly. I think a technician/HP would just replace the whole display so I don’t know if you could isolate it to just the cable.
