Recovery USB

Hi Team,

I have created recovery Pen drive. But i am not able to boot from it. I am selecting Boot from pen drive in boot option. But the normal window is starting. One more thing, In My computer my pen drive is showing as normal pen drive. I have another bootable pen drive when connected it shows windows icon.

OS - Windows 7 64 Bit

Pen Drive - San Disk USB 3.0 32GB, sdcz48-032g

Please advice how i can create USB recovery.

You can create HP recovery USB only ONCE.

So how did you create two BOOTABLE USB? If first one is not showing as bootable in my computer, then it is not recovery USB.

This is only one of the reasons I use third-party tools for backup and recovery -- as you can create a recovery USB stick as many time as you want.

I prefer to use third-party recovery solutions for the following reasons:
1) More flexibility and reliabilty -- can make recovery media as often as you like, not restricted to one attempt, which if it fails, then you are stuck.
2) More media options -- can create media in DVD, USB stick, or external drive format
3) Mounting option -- can "mount" the save images as virtual "drives" and extract individual files and folders
4) WinPE boot option -- can install a special boot option that allows you to boot to recovery information and do a repair or restore from there -- when Windows will not boot

What I recommend is the following:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR) from here: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
2) Run MR and choose the option: "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" to write a full backup to an external drive, USB stick, or DVDs
3) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

My experience is that MR, when using the High Compression option, typically can compress the saved image file to about 50% of the USED space in the OS partition. This means if you have an 80GB OS partition, and 40GB is used, MR only needs about 20GB to store the image file.

I use this all the time and it typically takes less than 10 minutes to do the image backup and about the same time or less to do a restore. Plus, MR has the option to Add a Recovery Boot Menu entry. This allows you then to boot into WinPE, and you can then use that to do a restore -- when you can't boot into Windows!

NOW, you have the means to restore a full working system from the external drive, USB or DVDs stick in only a few minutes.

Hi visruth, 2nd USB is not created from HP Recovery. This i have borrowed from someone. In the last post i just said that "I have another bootable pen drive when connected it shows windows icon". I did not said another one is created from HP Recovery. Anyway my aplogies for not clarify this at first.

So any idea why my recovery USB is not working? Or am i missing something here.

Hi WAWood, Thank for your reply. Could you help me to understand how actually i can create USB image. I have following questions-

1. Do i need to select C Drive as source to create image where OS is installed. I have HP Recovery Partision as D Drive. 

2. If i need to select C Drive-

     2.1 I already have installed some software in the my System. Will those will also stored in Image file

     2.2 Will the USB be bootable. Or do i need to do something for making it Bootable

     2.3 What is WinPE. could you explain a bit about it.

     2.4 Is there any way to craete Bootable USB from my Recovery Partition, means D Drive.

Are you now still able to create Recovery USB by following the steps given in the HP document I posted in my first post here?

Do you get any messages when you try to do so?

Hi visruth, I have created the recovery usb following that link only. It did not gave me any error or warning message. But when i am choosing that pend rive in boot option it does not boot from there and instead boot from Hard Disk.

Yes visruth. It did say that. Screen was same as in this link http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01867124  Saving a recovery image to a USB flash drive in Windows 7 Figure7.

However i renamed the pen drive to something meaningfull.

What was the earlier name it had? I think pen drive image might have got corrupted.

When did you create this recovery media?

Why are you trying to to do factory reset at present?
