HP TouchSmart Notebook
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I've owned this laptop for over two years now and have had no problems whatsoever with it. Up until four days ago, when it seemingly froze for no reason and would not respond to any commands - even as far as trying to shut it down by holding the power button - until I removed the battery. Once I inserted the battery and tried to start it up again, it would get as far as the HP logo screen, then it would become a black screen with a simple cursor. And it would be stuck there. I googled and googled and googled for help and seemingly found fixes that I believed I could do on my own.

So I purchased a USB flash drive, did the whole Memory Recovery thing and the USB now holds all of the initial stuff I had on my laptop before I reset it to its factory settings. However when I reset it, my background that was a saved picture that I assumed to be lost was still the same. Granted there were none of my pictures, music, anything other than that that would lead one to believe that this wasn't a brand new laptop. So I searched around, was able to find the Recovery folder on the USB and I ran it. It did the whole thing of "restoring" with the bar measuring the percentage of its progress and everything.

Only to stay as exactly as it was with its "factory settings." I have searched continously for help for this problem on this website, as well as third party websites and I must be missing something that is causing a disconnect between the recovery and the restoration of it.

Please please please help. I have 2+ years of pictures, music, etc. saved on this flash drive that was recovered from my computer.

Hello, @dvnielle96 - Greetings!

Welcome to the HP Support Forums!  It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel!

I see that you are having issues with your notebook recovery. Did you try performing a recovery directly from the recovery option going to the startup menu?

Go to http://hp.care/2ogmP3i and follow the steps under " Recovery when Windows does not start correctly" to perform the recovery. Once the recovery is done, plug the flash drive and copy and paste your date back to the notebook.

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!

Good luck 🙂
