Hi Liz35
The next time the crash happens (seems to be around once a month or so), I'll run the reliability monitor to see if it shows anything and perhaps that will give me/us/anyone enough information to pin down what's causing it.
Many thanks for your assistance 🙂 hopefully its sorted or will be soon enough.
Best regards
Gavin

Ooops, it happened again
And as amnaakhtar said, it was as my laptop was running on battery. The event log said, an update failed (an update which already had been discussed in the forum "HP Development Company, L.P. - System - 5/26/2017 12:00:00 AM - 6.0.21.1 - Error 0x800f0247") and the reliability history said IAStorDataMgrSvc.exe stopped working. No graphics driver failure to find anywhere.
I really wonder where this error comes from and why it didn't occur any time before a couple of months. Might it be the BIOS version...?

Sorry to hear that its happened to you again.
I have to admit that I never really leave my laptop running on batteries alone. In fact it rarely leaves the desk anyway so no real point in my case.
I've noticed most of these crashes tend to be after a major update but they also happen after running youtube videos for a prolonged period.
I'm no software engineer but I'm wondering more along the lines of drivers etc. You could well be right as far as BIOS goes, I honestly don't know.
I had my old Toshiba laptop for 10 years and it only ever needed to be formatted once. Always joked about never having another laptop that lasted for that length of time again (it was used every day). I guess I was right...
Incidentally, I did an event log check during the last crash and it didn't say anything had gone wrong...which is a bit weird really.

Well it just happened to me again, although to be fair I was running youtube and working on playing/building a playlist at the same time.
I checked the reliability tool that was previously suggested and curiously the only entry that showed up as being an error was the following.
Problem: Windows was not properly shut down.
Description
The previous system shutdown at 17:27:50 on 10/09/2017 was unexpected.
So that's....rather helpful in solving the issue...not! >insert eyeroll emoticon here<
No Windows updates from today so that rules that out and Apple's irritating attempts to get me to download iTunes came through yesterday so its not that either.
Getting a bit concerned now. I have a feeling that sooner or later, the laptop is either going out the window on a one-way flight or its just going to crash and not recover... Money is short and I cannot afford a replacement just at the moment.
Reading around other forums, it does appear to be a common complaint.

Just a bit of an update.
I've dug around Windows 10 and found a bit more detail but not sure if I should be more concerned now than I was before. Apparently windows has identified this as Event 41 Kernel-power, Event ID 41, Task Category (63)
Looking around on Google using that information leads me to think the hard drive itself may be an issue (on the verge of failing). However I have run tests on this and all appears to be working (at least for the moment anyway).
A quick check using Command Prompt and "wmic diskdrive get status" gives an OK message. No issues there.
I am also running the drive error check too, which has now completed and Windows 10 politely informs me that there were no errors found.
Needless to say I'm backing up all my media files (photographer is my main passtime when not at work) but still its fairly worrying...

Thank you Ruzy. I will look into that the next time the issue re-occurs.
That's one of the big issues with this particular problem. It may happen to me once every 1-2 months so I can try something particular (such as what you suggest) and have ages to wait until it might solve the problem. And then I have to remember how to undo the new settings if indeed it/they don't have any effect.
But I thank you for your input anyway and will give it a try.
Best regards
Gavin

Well it happened again just a few minutes ago. I looked into the event viewer and this is what it picked up.
Video.UI (6356,D,0) {127F2350-510D-49AA-B641-C3BEE9308581}: A request to read from the file "C:\Users\Gavin\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.ZuneVideo_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\Database\842a069a890aadd9\EntClientDb.edb" at offset 65536 (0x0000000000010000) for 8192 (0x00002000) bytes succeeded, but took an abnormally long time (40 seconds) to be serviced by the OS. This problem is likely due to faulty hardware. Please contact your hardware vendor for further assistance diagnosing the problem.
Once again I have tried going through the utilities that Windows 10 has to offer (check discs etc) and nothing has been found. However once again, Windows was updating at the time...
Don't think I've heard of this "zune video" before.
