spk_2984, In setting up your computer, did you apply a BIOS upgrade that was distributed through the HP Support Assistant?

Alansandal,  I have submitted an email to HP in the hopes of shaking something loose.

spk_2984, Did you recently install a BIOS update through the HP Support Assistant. If not, could you please use msinfo32.exe to see if the version of the BIOS is "Insyde F.14, 10/4/2013"

At a blank spot on the start screen type "msinfo32.exe"
Click on the msinfo32.exe icon
Read the BIOS Version/Date about 1/3 of the way down.

Gentlemen,

My email to HP on this problem has yielded some success.  I was advised to rollback the BIOS and that has, in fact, resolved the problem, at least for me on my HP Pavilion Nortebook PC 17-e040us.  The rollback was simple as could be, just holding down the "Windows" key in combination with the "B" key and powering up the PC from a complete shutdown.

The link to the complete page of instructions they gave me is:

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02693833

Looks like it would be a fairly safe thing to try.  If any PC is not equiped to rollback the BIOS this way, it will probably just ignore the keystrokes.

Well done DaveyK, I'm really pleased this has worked for you! What I'm not sure about is whether to use your roll-back method or the one I outlined in my previous post to you. I would like to ask HP the question. Is there any chance I could use your email contact in HP?

Didn't have an email contact, just went to www.HP.com.  Selected "Support/Support & Troubleshooting" and typed in my laptop model. On the page that followed, clicked on "Contact HP" and then "Email"

On the detailed instructions whose link I posted above, it mentioned what I thought was a reference to the method you posted in case the "Windows/B" keys didn't get you a rollback. Probably for older machines which didn't have the "Windows\B" thing built in. I'm sure your newer machine has it built in.

It worked for me too!!!!

DaveyK, I really am extremely grateful to you for finding the solution to this problem.  Thank you!

I can now get on with some serious computing, until the next bug comes along!!

HI guys,

The sleep problem of mine was solved by updating the BIOS to INsyde F.23,26-09-2013.

Now the  laptop recovers from sleep properly.

However I have a problem related to WLAN - Wifi connection keeps dropping and sometimes goes in an infinite loop where I need to restart the system. My N/w adapter is Mediatek MT7630E.

All other devices in my house function well with the Wi-Fi connection.

Thanks,

Thanks for giving me the hint on BIOS version

Hi spk_2984. I'm glad you've sorted out the sleep problem. When I purchased my computer I had a problem with the wifi connection, which I sorted using the tips in this video:

It might be worth a try if it's something you haven't tried already.
