I’ve discovered the issue here (at least in my case).

The power adapter connector on the cable end and the power port (jack) opening on the laptop can become oxidized which will reduce the current. This is the reason for the Low (insufficient) voltage warning.

First be sure to unplug the adapter AC cord and remove the main battery from the laptop.

Inspection: with magnified viewer, inspect both the power plug and jack for oxidization. This can appear as a greenish powder where the metals meet.

Carefully clean the connector parts using a thin cleaning wipe such as the ones used for LCD screen cleaning which are pre-moistened with cleaner and use a clean coffee stirrer  straw to carefully tuck in the cleaning swipe. Repeat as needed being very careful not to bend or damage the center pin for the plug and the jack opening. Also be aware not to force the clean-wipe into the connector so that it may get stuck.

I offer this solely as a consideration that had worked for me. This procedure is 'At Your Own Risk' and may not be advisable for some. It is Not an official HP service method and HP is Not to be responsible for any malfunction or damage in any way whatsoever.

Cheers

Additional Note: The above cleaning is for light oxidization. If the connector surfaces are badly corroded, scared or damaged, then these parts must be replaced.

My Hp Pavilion dv7 is doing the same thing with the same exact message.

I've have this laptop for about 2 years and just now is this happening. I've tried the hard restart option and still no fix.

The only thing I can think of is possibly my computer really does need a new charger. Recently I've had a hard drive/Bios etc. failure and had to replace the hard disk, I did replace it with a stronger hard disk so I'm not sure if that could make the charger just about not strong enough. The thing is though, wouldn't you think if that were the case then the message would have popped up right after replacing the hard disk?

I just don't know. I would love some alternative options asap. If I don't get any I WILL have to buy a new charger tomorrow. I can't stay away from it for too long.

I just want to ask that some times when I plug in the AC adapter into my Laptop[probook 4540s core i5 3rd gneration]

Hello Rated_R,

You’re getting a message that the ac adapter is not working correctly.

It may be that the ac adapter is going bad.

Do a hard reset.
Turn the computer off.
Remove the power cable and the battery.
Hold down the power button for 15 sec while booth power sources are removed.

This should reset the hardware in the computer.

As you turn it back on tap the F10 key. This will load BIOS setup utility.
Press F9 to load defaults.
Press F10 to save and exit.

When the computer boots back up, check to see if everything is working.

Here is a link to a number to give HP a call and see what options they may have to replace the adapter.

Let me know how everything goes.

About a year agp I started seeing the message about the adapter not having sufficient power. I called HP warranty service because I was in the warranty period. I was promised a new adapter and it arrived in less than a week. Great! Oh, but wait - the original adapter is 90 Watts and the replacement only 65. Hmmm, guess what the replacement gets the message about insufficient power. So went back to the original adapter and after a couple of updates from HP stopped seeing the message. Coincidence? Maybe not since others have seen this problem since that time.

But for the past 5 months I have not seen the message about insufficient power. The idea that the plug has oxidized might explain this but I did not clean the plug.

Everyone that has been getting that annoying HP SMART ADAPTER MESSAGES..Apparently this is a BIOS UPDATE ISSUE!

Here is the link that they gave me to update the bios.  I did this, and it has done the trick, so far!  Fingers crossed!
