Following your instructions I uninstalled teh Microsoft virtual wifi miniport adapter and restarted the computer. After fnning the disc and putting batteries in the mouse, I got the same SoftAP is not available.
Apparently uninstalling the adapter did not permit softAp to be enabled.
Now how do I get Microsoft Virtual wifi Miniport Adapter back in case it is needed for something else?
Should I do a system restore to the first available restorepoint before uninstalling the adapter, or is there a more reliable way to get it back?

So some quick info:
OS: Windows 7 64 bit
Wifi Adaptor: Atheros ar9285
Current Driver: 9.2.0.439 (installed 8/3/2011)
My main issue, was an issue arrising after coming back out of sleep/standbye mode. The mouse wouldn't get detected, and after attempting the netsh--- commands, I'd get the annoying "The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the request opperation." message. I was double checking the information on the linked to hotfix when I read something that piqued my interest, and allowed me to finally find a viable solution. (By viable I mean not fixed forever, but at least I got the mouse reconnected without needed to do a restart!)
Here's what I read, under the WORKAROUND header:
"To work around this issue, disable and then enable the wireless network adapter in Device Manager. After you do this, Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Adapter is created automatically."
I figured hey why not give it a try.
That, by itself, does not fix the issue.
HOWEVER, combined with 4 simple netsh commands my mouse magically reconnected.
So in order, here is EXACTLY what I did to regain connectivity for my mouse, WITHOUT restarting:
- Open your Network and Sharing center, and click the link off to the side that says: "Change adaptor settings." Once you have a list of your adaptors displayed, right click your wifi adaptor (mine being the Atheros ar9285, also make sure you aren't messing with the Virtual wifi miniport one), and select Disable.
- Wait a few moments (count to 5?), then right click again and hit Enable.
- Now open cmd (by typing in cmd in the search box of your start menu and hitting enter).
- Type, "netsh wlan stop hostednetwork" (just like that, letter for letter, space for space, like it is, INSIDE of the quotation marks, don't include the quotation marks...), and hit enter.
- Type, "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=disallow", and hit enter.
- Type, "netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow", and hit enter.
- Type, "netsh wlan start hostednetwork", and hit enter.
You should regain a connection to your mouse within seconds.
A couple of things:
- Steps 5 and 6 may not be necessary, but I'm too lazy to do it all again to find out...
- I noticed that even though I had be connected and had "internet access" for my network, it took another 30 seconds or so for my browser (Google Chrome) to open up the last page of this forum (from page 2), acting like it had no connection. After about 30 seconds and hitting the refresh key a few times, it loaded, and I haven't noticed any further connection issues.
Hope that helps guys, and sorry if it was too wordy.... I feel that even the more precise and simple the directions, the better chance of making sure anyone who reads it might get the help they were looking for...

I do not have the "No SoftAP" issue. The HP WiFi mouse will pair and connect just fine if there are no wireless connections. Obviously I need a wireless connection to get internet etc. When I add a wireless connection, the WiFi mouse disconnects and will not reconnect. The notebook is a Elitebook 8540p and the wireless adapter is the Intel "Advanced 6200 AGN." I have tried all the "disable adapter and reinstal"l ideas to no avail. I think HP needs to fix or redesign their driver for this product. The WiFi mouse is a good idea but useless and a waste of time trying to make it work.

I disable and enable back Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter in control panel and it works! And so far had tried it out few times. Each time disable it, the wifi mouse will not work. When enable back, it will work. So I guess the virtual adapter is the key. My driver dated 6/21/2006

Thanks for the many responses on this item.
My own issue was caused by a change in the "Power Management" of the wifi adapter in my HP Probook 6460b. Funny enough I had changed it to not allow shutting down to try and make my mouse more reliable.
To fix this, I have to "uninstall" the wireless card in device manager, remove the registry entry for the wireless card configuration, and then allow the machine to re-add the wireless card as a new device.
Use with caution, but I used regedit to remove the following section of the registry:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4d36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318]\0012
Of course, your own wireless card would be at a slightly different location, but if you are comfortable enough that editing a registry is ok, then you can find the proper location... 🙂
After that, I then had to re-pair my mouse. It is now working once again as it did before.
I have found the mouse does work well on ocassion, but then it often gets very "choppy" and often disconnects for a couple of seconds... and that is while sitting at my desk and not changing anything in terms of WiFi connectivity.
The wifi card supports the proper profiles, and the laptop is running Windows 7, but still these issues.
I am not pleased with the unreliable nature of the mouse connection and will likely replace the mouse with something else.
As an aside, I have the 6460b Probook that came from factory without bluetooth.... unfortunately. Is there any way to actually install a bluetooth module IN the machine? I have the module (purchased the HP part number from an aftermarket vendor), but it is not being recognized by the machine... I am thinking that the "Factory Option" means that the hardware is somehow different in a way other than just the bluetooth module install. If anyone has any tips to get this working, it would be appreciated! I would hate to lose a USB port for a bluetooth adapter!

Wow, I see this problem is quite common. I have Windows 7 as per the requirements on the packaging. It paired up fine however, when my Gateway NV5209h laptop goes into hibernation I have to pair it again. Annoying to say the least. But when I try to pair it, I get the same SoftAp is not available. I have to reboot the laptop each time to get it to pair. Judging by all the posts here I doubt HP has provided a fix for this. So on that note, I'm going to return it for a refund. Sadly I thought I was getting a deal, $20 regular $40. I hope to find a WiFi mouse in the future that does not have a glitch.
