Hi HP Support,

I have an HP Spectre 13 (2018) - af018ca and I tried to connect it to a monitor via USB-C without the HDMI adapter but every time I tried to extend the display, it would always revert back to single display on the laptop. I have tried updating all the drivers (firmware, BIOS, ThunderBolt, Serial IO) but to no avail.

The USB-C monitor in question is a Dell 27" Ultrathin Monitor S2718D, which I know works through USB-C because it is connected with my Lenovo X1 Carbon this way.

I have the same issue as this user but it was left unsolved:

Please help, thanks

Thank you for posting on HP Forums,

Flower_Bud is at your service.

As I understand, you're having issues connecting your notebook to an external monitor,

No worries, as I'll be glad to help you, that said, I'll need a few more details to dissect your concern & provide an accurate solution:

Have you tried using another USB C adapter?

Are you using HP Genuine USB C adapter?

While you respond to that, you could update Graphics and Chipset drivers from our HP Website: Click here

Also, here are the steps to connect a USB Type-C Thunderbolt® device to your computer, you need a USB Type-C cable, purchased separately.

To see a video or high-resolution display output on an external Thunderbolt device, connect the Thunderbolt device according to the following instructions:

1. Connect one end of the USB Type-C cable to the USB Type-C Thunderbolt port on the computer.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the external Thunderbolt device.

3. Press f4 to alternate the computer screen image between 4 display states.

● PC screen only: View the screen image on the computer only.

● Duplicate: View the screen image simultaneously on both the computer and external device.

● Extend: View the screen image extended across both the computer and external device.

● Second screen only: View the screen image on the external device only.

Each time you press f4 the display state changes.

NOTE: For best results, especially if you choose the "Extend" option, increase the screen resolution of the external device, as follows. Select the Start button, select the Settings icon, and then select System. Under Display, select the appropriate resolution, and then select Keep changes.

You could refer to Page number 20 from the User Guide: Click here

Keep me posted,

Cheers!

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,

Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum.  Have a great day!

Hi Flower_Bud, thanks for the reply. Here are my comments:

Have you tried using another USB C adapter?

It is not a USB-C adapter, it is connecting the USB-C on the monitor directly to the USB-C on the computer. The USB-C Thunderbolt cable supplied with the monitor works on my other laptop.

Are you using HP Genuine USB C adapter?

HP does not sell HP branded USB-C to USB-C Thunderbolt cables

Graphics and Chipset drivers already updated to latest version. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. I followed the steps on connecting the USB-C on the computer first then connecting it to the monitor, pressed F4 until I reached Extend display but nothing happens. Windows 10 keeps popping up a message saying "Display connection might be limited".

Any other ideas? or could you escalate to a technical engineer?

@Ken_s1

Thanks for responding,

It's great to have you back,

Are you connecting the cable to USB Type-C Thunderbolt port (In the rear of your notebook)?

If not, I suggest you try connecting the cable to the USB Type-C Thunderbolt port (With a thunderbolt symbol) and check.

If the issue still persists, I will send you a private message to assist you with the next course of action. Please check your forum private message box next to the bell notification icon on the upper right-hand corner for a private message from me for further assistance.

All the ports at the rear of the notebook are all Thunderbolt ports other than the headphone jack and charging port.

I will respond to your message

Thanks for replying,

You could look at Page number 5 from the User Guide of your notebook and connect the cable to Port number 3 mentioned on that page.

Let me know 🙂
