I suggest contacting HP for warranty service. This is not a common issue.

It is better to get this repair taken care of while the notebook is still covered under warranty.

Check your warranty status Here.

The problem could be the power distribution\charging circuitry on the systemboard or the fan & heat pipe thermal energy transfer devices.  Capacitors that are failing can make squealing noises.

My Spectre x360 (i7 model) got the exact same issue.

What did HP say?

I can't afford to be without a notebook for several weeks right now so I didn't send it in yet, but this is most definitely a hardware issue and needs to be taken care of.

On a side note, I found out that changing the desktop resolution to 1920x1080 did stop the noise for me. Even after going back to 2560x1440 it stayed quiet, but eventually reappeared. Can you confirm this?

Ok i will try that resolution thingy.

Well unfortunately the tech didn't believe me when I said the noise had nothing to do with the fan and marked the issue as 'FAN NOISE', but luckily they include a form when they ship you the box you are supposed to use for the RMA, and I had plenty of room to outline exactly what the problem is. I dropped it off at a FedEx location yesterday so I have nothing more to say about it yet, but they do ask for contact info in case they need to ask for futher information, so I'm confident that at least they will be aware of the problem.

I'm kind of expecting a replacement at this point since I doubt this is an easy to fix problem but who knows.

That's interesting, but I'm not surprised it eventually returned since I have this issue on the 1080p model.

Downgrading the resolution of my notebook did not cure the noise issue. Btw I noticed that it started making noise when an HDMI cable was inserted.

I have the i7 (1080p) model and noticed this not long after receiving it. Same description of the noise, coming from the same location.

I have also noticed that it continues even when the laptop is shut down and unplugged, which is a little concerning for battery life.  If there is a constant drain, then charge will decrease regardless of use. I haven't tested the battery life rigorously, but after a day's work, with on and off use, I came home with half a charge, so it probably can't be too bad.

Please let us know how HP respond. I spent an hour online tonight waiting for a response to online chat, but gave up.

So I received a call from the technician today and it's bad news... He can't hear it. So either the conditions changed to where it is somehow no longer producing the sound, or he is overlooking it. I did perform a reset before I sent it in... so could it be/have been a software issue?

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that he would notice it if it were there, and I'll let you guys know if it's still an issue when it gets back.

Thanks for keep us updated.

| am returning mine to Amazon.

Definitely not software-related. I just had even weirder issues with mine, where the Windows login screen was completely messed up, and the distortion changed visibly when I touched the screen just as the noise would. I believe these problems are related. I'm going to send mine in as soon as my vacation starts.
