Hello Spectre x360 user

HP had released a touchpad driver to improve clicking performance. See below for download information.

Recommend to keep your system with latest driver through HP Support Assistant.

Synaptics Touchpad Driver

Version: 18.1.30.16
Revision: A

Download here sp71089.exe

Yeah this driver will not help with the issue people are reporting on here. It is a physical issue!.  The touchpad makes a rattle when setting your finger down on the touchpad area to move the cursor!

Where did you guys purchased your laptop from? Are any of them from HP.com?

I have two Spectre x360, one from Best Buy, another one from HP.com. The one from Best Buy also suffer loose/rattle touchpad. The one from HP is firm and doesn't rattle at all. I have went through 2 Spectre via Best Buy and each of them has their own issues. First one has dust under screen, second one has poor light bleed from top and loose trackpad.

Got mine from HP Store today. Same problem, loose trackpad. Will return.

Edit 8 Sep: Just received my 3rd one. Still having the same issue. HP Store Sweden are incredibly slow at sending new ones too...

I bought mine at Bestbuy.

My screen also came loose a bit so I had to open up again and tighten thoose screws.

Seems like everything is loose on this machine.

I do not have faith in this laptop long term....

Hi,

I just bought this laptop, was thinking of doing this.

Did it fix the problem completely?

Is the problem the fact that it just hasn't been screwed in properly?

Also how did you get to the trackpad? Did you take battery out? etc.

Thanks would love to hear from you.

If you just bought it honestly I would just return it if it is making the rattle. My screen also came loose as well recently and I had to open up machine and tighten thoose screws. Not very impressed with the build quality.  I would have returned mine but I was out the return period.

That being said I was able to fix mine but it took a lot of trial and error. It is not as simple as tightening the screws you have to actually carefully bend the trackpad itself.  I would not advise going this route unless you are comfortable with the fact if you bend it to much you could break it and have to by a new trackpad as I doubt they will cover it under warranty.

Yes you do have to remove the battery to get to the trackpad this machine is actually pretty easy to work on which is a nicety since everything keeps coming loose.

From what I can tell the problem is in the tolerances between the trackpad opening and the trackpad itself are so small that if the track pad is out of alignment a tiny bit you will get the rattle.

But while I fixed mine if I had the option I would have returned my machine it took over 45 minutes of playing with it to get it just right. If you bend it too much it will stick down or won't click and you may not know until you get it all back together with the screws tightened. So it is very much a pain.

Thanks for the reply.

I just returned a Dell XPS 13, so I'm already on my second computer. lol

I have read reports of people sending it back and getting one with the exact same problem, so I'm trying to weigh up whether it will be worth the hassle.

When you took it apart, did you have to disconnect the battery to get at it? Is the battery on one of those annoying ribbon connectors?

Otherwise I am loving the machine, its just so disappointing.

Totally understand it is an awesome machine minus the build issues. I do not know what HP was thinking with their QA. It has been over a month so I dont' remember specifics but I think at the end I was able to swing the battery out of the way without actually disconnecting the ribbon cable to get to the trackpad. But honestly the ribbon cable is not very hard to work with as long as you are careful.  If I remember correctly their are a couple ribbon cables that you have to remove to get to track pad fully. Battery, speaker and one other but they are not that bad to remove and replace.

I will warn you again though that actually fixing it is a process and you could easily end up ruining your trackpad. My track pad though is 100% better and does not clatter when I use it for scrolling etc.

If you are going in anyways once you get trackpad set you might want to open up one last time and put some loctight on the 4 screen screws as well so thoose don't loosen up and cause other problems in the future.

It has been fixed! Yay 😄

Opened it up and tighted the screws around the trackpad, took your advice about pushing it abit so I did that, and it fixed it.

Very very pleased. So much better now. Can't believe that that came like that from the factory though.
