Earlier today I managed to splash some coffee on my keyboard. The computer didn't turn itself off which hopefully is a good sign but I did turn it off almost immediately after the spill. Unfortunately I was at the university library when it occurred so the most I could do was clean the coffee off the top of the keyboard and flip it to tablet mode so that the keyboard was facing down. None of the keys feel sticky either when pressed.
I also spoke to HP Support and they told me to wait 12 hours before booting it back up since we don't know the extent of the damage, IF there is any damage (fingers crossed).
Now that I'm home, I was wondering if there were any other precautions I should take? Like opening up the laptop and cleaning off the inside of the keyboard? Removing the battery? I'm still sort of panicking and the laptop is barely a week old so any help is super appreciated.

Hi,
How much coffee was spilled? It is a good idea to remove the battery. In my opinion if the coffee wasn' too much you will have no real problems with computer as the top cover and keyboard are one integrated part. It isn't simple to change the keyboard on the device because you need to disassemble the whole PC and replace top cover and keyboard, as you can see in service manual (however this integrated part does offer more protection against accidental spills).

Basically you need to wait until the coffee completely dries and then you can clean the keyboard with technical alcohol or ethil alcohol using cotton swabs. You can also pop off keys, but they can be difficult to pop on again. You could disassemble the pc and clean the keyboard and top cover, but this doesn't seem necessary.
Let me know if you need further help,

Hi David,
Thanks for your response.
Probably a small splash or two got onto the keyboard, so not a significant amount.
However, I'm not able to unscrew the screws on the back plate. I'm using the right size head and type, but the screws will not budge at all so I'm not able to remove the battery which worries me.
