I have been having the same **bleep** issue! It's such BS because I even added an extra 4gb of RAM to make sure my system would perform well. Now I have issues with this **bleep** PC CONSTANTLY, I am VERY dissapointed in HP and Microsoft. I will NEVER purchase an HP product or Windows product AGAIN. I am going to switch to MAC.

If you have had the same issues with the computer have you changed the usb settings as we have described? it has worked for almost everyone.

My split is now rock solid with windows 8.1. And please don't give me that Mac crap, they may be "solid" but only because they don't do anything real. if all you need is a media consumer and want to pay double then be my guest.

How do I change the USB settings>?

HP Recommended

open devie manager.

"Go to Generic USB Hub (both of them) in Device Manager.

Go to the Power Management tab in each USB hub.

Uncheck the box about allowing the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart."

How about the USB Root Hub...? Also need to uncheck...?

HP Recommended

I did not uncheck that box, but mine is unchecked so I think you should uncheck it and if something else comes up try it the other way.

I tried unching the gen usb hub but continue to have the same issue even though it seems to be working for everyone else.  Will try the USB root hub also so now that makes a total of 5:

Generic USB Hub x 2

USB Root Hub x2

Usb Root Hub (xHCI) x 1

No really sure if this messes anything else up but we will say. Great laptop other than this issue.

My screen does not seem as bright as it used to but I will start a new thread on this.

did you find a solution?

Don't forget to give me kudos if I helped!

I only have 1 generic usb hub in device manager...unchecked it...haven't restarted yet...

Just though I'd mention that when my touchpad freezes I just touch the screen and the pad starts working again...
