Yes, all is well. The difficulty of switching from S-Mode to regular-mode was resolved, after great difficulty, by the help desk at the Microsoft Store. They admitted it was a bug in the Windows software. I am still curious why more purchasers of this HP model have not encountered the problem.

As for the question about using the ALT key and a series of numbers to create special characters, I saw a comment on the internet that if you do not have a key pad on your computer, it can't be done. So I guess that question is settled, too. I have resolved it by creating a macro that pulls out the special characters I use most often. So I guess that isn't too much of a problem, either.

I also had a question about using my new flash drive on my new HP computer.. When I put it into the computer a little bell rings, but nothing shows up in File Explorer. I checked Device Manager / Disk Drives. The flash drive shows up there with the name “Scan Disk Ultra USB Device.” Every indication is that all is working properly. I uninstalled and reinstalled. I scanned. But the flash drive still does not show up on File Explorer. . I took up the issue with the manufacturer, and they said the flash drive is obviously faulty and I should take it back to the store where I bought it.

So I am a happy camper, thanks to help from nice people – Microsoft, the Flash drive manufacturer, and an unknown internet interlocutor.
