Hey Kon1988,
I'm sorry you're running into this issue with your mouse. There are a couple of software fixes you can try but most likely if you're getting this message before Windows begins, it's a hard ware issue. The software fixes are still well worth a try though.
Synaptics Touchpad Driver version 15.0.17.2
Download and install the touchpad driver above. Then restart and test to see if the mouse is recognized. If not, move on to the BIOS software below.
Download and install the BIOS software. Your computer will restart during the installation. Allow it to restart and load to the desktop. Test to see if the mouse is recognized.
If the mouse still isn't recognized, this is probably a hardware issue. Have there been any drops or spills? Let me know the results when you get a chance 🙂

Unfortunately, reinstalling Windows would be the next step. By itself a Windows reinstall is simple but it requires some extras like backing up files and then reloading the files and reinstalling programs afterwards. I could definitely walk you through it though if you are willing to do that.
I should let you know though, I wouldn't be able to guarantee that it would resolve the problem though. If the touchpad cable has come disconnected or if the connection is just bad, nothing short of hardware replacement would resolve it.

No worries. I understand. Are you able to use a USB mouse as a work around?
If you do happen to decide you want to do that, you don't necessarily need discs if you don't have them already. You can use the recovery partition on your hard drive. See the following website for the instructions.
Steps for Recovery - see Recovery from the Startup screen (during system boot)
Let me know if you run into any questions

Hey Harbourlights,
For the 4540s, use this driver:
Synaptics TouchPad Driver version 16.3.9
You might want to check and see what version you have currently. If you already have 16.3.9, you'll need to adjust your sensitivity. Check out this link for steps and pictures on how to adjust the sensitivity.
Please let me know if that helps or if you run into any other issues or questions 🙂
