Pavilion g6 Notebook
Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit)
I am receiving the message:

SMART Hard Disk Error

The SMART hard disk has detected an imminent failure. To ensure not data loss, please backup the content immediately and run the Hard Disk Test in System DIagnostics.

Hard Disk 1 (301)

F2 System Diagnostics

ENTER - Continue Startup
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com\go\techcenter\startup

On pressing ENTER i get the message: A disk read error occurred, Pres Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart which then takes me to the previous message above.

I have tried the System Diagnostics Hard Disk Test however this fails, along with the Start-Up Test and the Run-In Test.

Please tell me what I can do, am I even able to back up by data if I cannot get on to the desktop?

Thanks in advance

Hi @EmmaK03 ,

Welcome to the HP Forums!:smileyhappy:

I understand that you have received the Hard Disk 1, error 301 and you are unable to a run the system hard drive  diagnostics , startup or run test and when you try to get to the desktop it continually takes you to the error screen.

As you  already know you will need to replace the hard drive.  You may be able to connect the original drive in an external case or look for some data recovery software to retrieve your data.

If you created your recovery disks for the notebook, once you have the new hard drive installed you should be able to do a recovery.  If you did not create the recovery CD/DVDS , please contact HP support to obtain a recovery kit.

If you are in warranty please contact HP support before doing anything else.

If you are not in warranty you can do the repair yourself or take it to a computer repair shop.
