My laptop took a spill, powercord got kicked.  I managed to grab for it and caught it just before it hit the floor, but it did hit.  It broke a corner off the case, did not break the glass, but now the screen is all white, all the time.  If I hook it to an external monitor it works fine, and there are no problems in the device manager.  I partially disassembled the unit and made sure the cables were plugged in snugly up top and down inside the base, and they are.  I've wiggled the cables to no avail.  I don't mind buying something to repair this, but I'd like to make an educated purchase, not a shot in the dark.

SO:

White screen after fall

Cables secure

No cracks

Laptop operates fine

No hardware conflics

Boots both on battery and A/C alone, no difference.

Any suggestions are appreciated, and I'd love to hear from you if you've had this happen to you.

Prior to this happening, there were no issues at all from this nice, fast, reliable laptop.

If it did hit the floor and broke the corner of the case, then the impact to the LCD panel most likely "kill" the TFT panel or the Inverter especially you have no problem in seeing the image with an external monitor connected via the VGA connector.

You may want to check either eBay or some LCD panel shop to "price" out a new LCD panel.

By the way, what is the model of this notebook?

It is a f730US.  The part that broke is the left front corner of the palmrest, near the touchpad.  So the physical shock to the unit can kill an LCD?  wow, I thought only a crack would hurt it.  What part of the screen do you think is broken?  I do some circuitboard soldering on the side, so if this is a broken connection issue I could fix it if I knew where to look.  Is this a fixable thing or a replace-the-whole-component thing?

Most the notebook Graphics controller provides output to three different devices. Namely;

1. Internal LCD panel via the LVDS port.
2. External Monitor via the VGA or RGB port.
3. TV support via the S-Video port.

However, only two of the three ports will be active at the same time.

It looks like one of the Graphics Controller outputs is still working since you can see image via the VGA connector.

Since the Graphics Controller can still output image, it means your motherboard especailly the Graphics Controller chipset is working.

The above url provides you a step by step procedure for you to remove the LCD panel and you may want to open it to check the LVDS ribbon cable connected to the TFT panel itself.

If the TFT or the inverter is bad, you can try to replace them without the need to get a complete LCD panel.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll try another screen, and then repost my results.  Give me about a week.

Clinton provides sound advice as usual. Check the connection of the video cable into the back of the display panel. If that gets jarred loose a little bit you have a white screen so worth a look. If the cable is firmly seated in the socket I would say you need a new display. There is nothing inside the screen you could hop to fix.

The new screen did the trick.  I was able to pick one up for $70.00 delivered.  Thanks a bunch for the good advice.  I'll be back next time it hits the floor (LOL).

hi - I am also in the same situtation. I dropped my Averatec 2200 laptop which I have been using for the last 2 years.

Did you check before installing the new LCD if you were able to connect to an external monitor. If this is true then I might think of hooking this up with my TV and buy a new laptop.

When I turn it on i hear the HDD boot up the chip is warm fan's spinning wireless is up but when I try to ping it .. nops.
