Hi. I think I have pretty similar problem on notebook HP Compaq NX6110  with crashed CD-ROM.

I've prepared the bootable USB drive using this procedure (with a small modification because I want to intall Windows XP):

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/...

Anyway, in bios setup I change the boot device options so that the "USB hard drive" is set as "the first" and USB Superdrive (slt) is set to the second... I save the settings etc. I restart the computer and in the blue boot menu that appears I can only choose Notebook harddrive and Optical drive (no USB).

Any ideas? Is it possible that this notebook does not support USB booting thought there is an option is BIOS?

Well after many trial and error i get it done. In boot option i enabled everything and in boot order i put "USB Hard drive" as first and everything USB related to 2nd and 3rd then internal CD/DVD drive then internal HDD. And it worked i was able to boot from the usb repair disk and restored windows with an image i created earlier. @ Gildor you should also do some trial and error to see if something work because since you have USB hard drive in boot option i am sure it will be usable. you should enabled every option in boot option too. Best of luck
