I'm pretty angry. The UEFI "BIOS" update, chipset firmware, hard drive firmware, and HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI  are only available from HP as Windows executables. There is nothing about updating firmware that requires Windows. All of this *could* have easily been provided as ISO files. *However* HP has stupidly made it impossible for users of OSs other than Windows to update their computers. Thanks a lot, HP for being Microsoft's lackey, and helping them enforce vendor lock-in. Also, thanks a lot for not supporting your products. why should I have to pay for support when HP made it impossible for its customers to update their computers. When I replace this laptop, you can bet it will not be with an HP laptop, I'll find another vendor for all my computing needs.

Hi,

You can update the BIOS by creating a bootable USB with the downloaded file on a Windows PC

and then use the USB to update the firmware.

Nope, this does not work. It does copy files to the flash drive, but the laptop won't boot from it. Whether it didn't copy the correct files, or maybe this laptop can't even boot from a flash drive, I don't know. This laptop is old enough, and the existing BIOS is so "dumbed down" and [content removed] that it's tough to tell whether this laptop can boot from a flash drive or not. It was an incredibly dumb idea to use a Windows executable for BIOS, firmware, and the diagnostic utility updates. Those don't depend on the OS, and there is no reason to use an OS-specific updater. It would have been much better to provide bootable ISO  images.
