Hello community,

I am experiencing a persistent boot issue with my HP EliteDesk 800 G6 SFF. I suspect a handshake problem between the UEFI firmware and the USB controllers during the pre-POST phase.

 

@Spiegel32 had the same Problem, but no solution was posted.

The Problem

If any external USB hard drives are connected during power-on, the system hangs completely before the HP logo appears.

  • No HP Logo / No POST.

  • No access to BIOS (F10) or Boot Menu (F9).

  • The screen remains black indefinitely.

Current Workaround

If I physically unplug the USB drives, the system boots normally to GRUB. Once the OS starts loading, I can reconnect the drives, and they are recognized and function perfectly.

Troubleshooting steps already taken:

  • BIOS Update: Flashed to the latest available version.

  • Secure Boot: Disabled.

  • Fast Boot: Disabled.

  • DMA Protection: Disabled (Kernel DMA Protection).

  • Boot Order: Internal drive is set to #1 (USB boot is at the bottom of the list).

  • USB Boot: disabled

It appears the UEFI firmware hangs while probing the USB mass storage devices or reading partition tables before the POST completes. This prevents any remote reboots or automated startups.

I am looking for a solution to ensure the BIOS ignores USB mass storage during the initial POST phase or a way to prevent this initialization timeout.

System Specs:

  • Model: HP EliteDesk 800 G6 SFF

  • Firmware: Latest UEFI

  • OS: Linux (GRUB Bootloader)
