As I have previously explained, not all thumb drives are "bootable" and it would help quite a bit to know more about your USB device:

1. How old is the thumb drive you are using?

2. Have you verified that you cannot boot from another USB flash drive, or have you only been trying the one?

"

Thumb drive works, and I can boot Ubuntu from the USB drive using a DEll laptop.

No problem.

That means the USB drive is not the problem.

previous reply did not appear.

This is 2nd post...

I was able to boot Ubuntu from same USB drive on a much older Dell laptop.

Like I said, if you have a dv7-4173us, try it out.

Again, the probe is not able to see USB boot enabled at

the Boot Manager screen for my hp laptop BIOS, even after I enable it on another screen.

See my details in earlier postings..... of this thread.

Hi hpng,

One thing I would like to make sure of, is when you have Windows loaded, if you plug the USB drive into the USB port, does it show the message that Windows has detected new hardware?

Yes.

I can also use Windows explorer to navigate the files in this USB drive..

Open a file, and save a file to it.....

Then I can do the "Safely Remove hardware and Eject Media" and it shows the current USB drive to eject.

Forgot to mention these also:

i have two dv7-4173us , same hardware, both behave the same way for the USB drive with Ubuntu.

I also attached other USB devices, and they hoth were detected by both laptops.

Again, the Ubuntu USB drive works with Dell laptop.

See previous response.

If you can figure out why after i setup BIOS to boot from USB under Boot Options setup,

the setup did not show in its BIOS Booth Manager screen, then we are closer to solving the problem.

Hi hpng,

At this time, with Windows detecting the USB flash drive, the USB drive working on your old Dell, and the steps for changing the boot order, it should have worked.

The last thing that it could be is a compatibility issue. It would be in your best interest to contact technical support at 800-474-6836. Best of Luck! 🙂

Thanks.

I have to install dual boot via DVD.

I am pretty sure others with dv7-4173us have the same problem.

Just so you know, on both my HP dv7-4173us laptops,

first time a new USB is plugged, it downloads or search for USB driver for the device.

Then installs it automatically.

then I can acccess the USB content or use it if it is a mouse.....

If I remove the USB drive or device and replug it again, it will just work.

No reintall of driver needed by OS.

There is NO pop-up of anything after first install of driver for the USB device.

Thanks.
