When choosing a new adapter to upgrade my WiFi capability, must I choose one with WiFi + Bluetooth capability, or just WiFi is sufficient?
The adapter is a Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter.

What would make that adapter incompatible is the HP BIOS whitelist. Embedded in the BIOS code is a list of wireless card metatags and if the card in the slot is not one of those, booting will not proceed past a black screen with a text warning. There is no 5ghz module that is going to get past that test. Sorry, it was never my idea to have the whitelist.

You MUST use one of the modules offered by HP as an option on that model when originally sold or it will not boot past a black screen with a text warning. We would need the full model number to give you a definitive list.

2000-410us is the model. Here is the manual:

Manual

(20) WLAN module: Atheros 9485GN 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi and 3012 Bluetooth 4.0 Combo Adapter 655795-001

Atheros AR9002WB-1NGB 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR Combo Adapter (BT3.0+HS ready) 593127-001

 Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi and 20702 Bluetooth 4.0 Combo Adapter 657325-001

Ralink 5390GN 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi Adapter 630703-001

Realtek 8188BC8 802.11a/b/g/n 2×2 WiFi and Bluetooth 3.0+HS Combo Adapter 602993-001

Realtek 8188GN 802.11b/g/n 1×1 WiFi Adapter 640926-001

Those are the approved wi-fi modules. First we need to check and see how many antennae you have.  See p. 43 for instructions how to open the access panel and see the wireless module and the wires. There really isn't one of the approved modules that is much better than the one you have I am afraid.

OK, the adapter installed is Atheros Model AR5B225 and it has 2 antenna wires, Main and Alt.

If a replacement card has standard WiFi capability, and the same connector and form factor as the original, but it's not among the list in the manual, then what would make that adapter incompatible?

Actually I'm mainly looking to expand the WiFi capability so that my laptop can communicate on a 5GhZ network as well as 2.4GHz.

Thanks for the help.
