It's good you have that option. I feel bad for the people that don't. I kind of lucked out. My coverage was in a grey are since some of the issues appeared to be software and some seemed to be hardware. Since, no one could figure out what was going on, I was in limbo. Luckily, I ran into a manager I knew. After seeing me deal with it for quite a while he bent the rules and allowed a swap. I'm picking up my new machine today. It's a Dell Inspiron 15r SE. The premium sound card and premium video card on a 1080p screen made the difference in my decision to drop a lot more cash. There a lot of other upgrades such as the obvious increase in processing speed. Good luck with your new machine!

The problem here is with the audio driver with different models. We shouldn't be buying external devices to deal with the problem, except if we intent to for different reasons as in music production etc. I understand that the petition has been submitted - any answers yet? I have the Envy 17t 3200 and aside from a fix that disables the FX I haven't tried any of the "fixed" drivers since I read that they don't alleviate the problem. I hope HP listens.

I really think I may have figured it out. Try and reduce the volume on secondary applications. For instance, YouTube allows you to turn the volume up and down on the video itself and Windows Media Player has the volume icon when you are listening to music or watching a movie.
The more you turn down the secondary volume the more you will have to turn up your speakers, but this should allow your audio to have more range and more fluctuation (this fluctuation is a good thing).
I have a DV6z quad edition laptop and when all volume levels (both primary and secondary) are turned up I do not hear any swings in the audio. This only pertains to no headphones being plugged in. When I plug in my headphones, however, I have to turn down the secondary volume otherwise I will hear audio swings.
I don't have any idea if anyone has tried this yet or if this was posted so please let me know if this works for anybody.
EDIT: Forgot to mention that in Windows Media Player you have to turn on Auto Volume Leveling.

Hi All,
DV6-7200 - I Installed new driver from hp.com and with this driver (6.10.6425) and found issue is resolved. still continue to test the PC with various type of Audio/Video and different bit rate media.
Finally, issue could be seen again with low bitrate audio and video files. What it means is that if you have an any audio or video file which has a low audio bit rate can still give you audio issue sometimes.
To take care of this issue, I updated the video driver from 9.17.10.2817 to 9.17.10.2857 which has Intel HD audio driver version 6.14.0.3097 as a component.
Now the PC is working fine.

I have twice emailed office of Meg Whitman, asking for action, but HP has decided not to respond. I think it shows the real level of care and interest this company has for it's customers - none.
Regardless, I want to keep pressing this issue. I will personally start emailing all technology websites, blogs, magazines to let them know about this problem. [Content Removed]

Ha! This has been driving me mad also (HP Envy 17 3290)
KGB999 on previous page is correct- you can fix this (and still retain use of of Beats volume, EQ, etc) by editing your XML presets..
Basically do what he said;
a) Find your c:\program files\IDT\WDM folder
b) use regedit as he described to find out which file is in use (in my case 'VuittonEq5.xml')
c) Keep a copy, obviously, and edit it. You need to edit in administrator mode (e.g. right click notepad, do 'run as administrator' then open the XML file with that notepad instance)
d) Set an "enable"s in the XML file to zero that you don't like the look of. My example file is here on pastebin and it's volume-ducking-free on headphones 🙂
e) Reboot (or go to device manager and disable/re-enable the IDT audio device)
Sweet! Thanks KGB999
This fix should work for anybody with the IDT drivers and XML file config stuff - go find your XML file and fix your own audio!
