Dont know if it's important but, when I tried your solution of unchecking "Allow the Computer to turn of this device to save power" for all USB Root Hubs, immediately after rebooting the PC i checked the Device Manager and the webcam was correctly under "Imaging devices", as soon as I started Skype to see if it was working, it immediately was unplugged and replugged (I heard the sounds), and I saw the webcam being identified again as "Unknown Device"...

F.31...that looks really old... i would suggest updating to new one F.63A from here... ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp48501-49000/sp48758.exe

Hmmm...this is good info....Can you do a few restarts without using the webcam, this is after BIOS update....Plus just double checking, after reinstalling a retail version of the OS have you install all the drivers required, like chipset, etc....

Just updated BIOS to F.63A as you suggested.

I already manually updated to the last version available these drivers when Windows Update finished it's job after my clean install of WIndows 7:

- Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 Driver

- Intel Chipset Installation Utility for ICH9m for Microsoft Windows 7

- Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family

- HP Quick Launch Buttons

- Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader

Also yet installed  HP Support Assistant.

After 3 reboots without using webcam (and keeping unchecked "Allow the Computer to turn off this device to save power" for all USB Root Hubs), unfortunately nothing changed... I always get "Unknown Device" :Crying:

OK...So now, i think the only thing that is left out is, we will need to go back to original OS and check if we are having the problem there as well...Now i get it, that issue has started after install the OS only and we did not have this issue before...but for now we have covered all bases with current setup...by doing that what I am trying to understand is what has changed for the USB/webcam to behave like this and Original OS is test reference point for that.

Yes, I think the only choice I have is to try to go back to Windows Vista with the Recovery CDs. The strange thing is that Windows 7 worked fine for about 6 months...

BTW, if rolling back to the original OS will not work, could it be a hardware problem of the hub root to which the webcam is connected?

Ah Ha! So it worked for 6 months before the problem started...Now, I have started to move more toward hardware problem...but would like to see if the problem happens on original OS to confirm that...

Now how do we find if the USB header is problem or webcam... generally if your USB ports are working fine that USB bus should be fine and it can be issue with webcam itself... but you will have to go thru std process of 'test with good known webcam on that USB header' to confirm that...

ATM I need to use the computer, and dont need the webcam so much. So as soon as I have some time to make a clean install of the original OS I'll do it and report it here (it can be helpful for someone else).

BTW, if after rolling back to Windows Vista the webcam is still an "Unknown Device", can you please suggest a tool to test if it is a hardware problem of root hub or webcam itself?

HP Recommended

Unfortunately, No...you will need to open up the same and swap it with good working webcam and check...

I'm having the exact same problem with web cam installed into my CQ71-402SA

reading through your conversation it just makes me feel like there is probably some kind of problem with the hardware, it's obviously not a big enough problem for HP to do a recall or whatever it is they do in the computer world, but it's a bummer, my lap top is still under warranty so I'm toying with the idea of dropping it in to a service centre.

still this doesn't help the fact my Girlfriend is in another country right now and she has no way to see me 😞

I have the same problem with you. I also posted a question in Mozilla tech forum: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=2031737

Please have a look and let me know your thought. Is it a MS problem or HP problem?

Thanks.
