Envy DV7
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

Good evening.

Well, my two year old Envy died the other day care of the chronic overheating issues that seem to have plagued Envys of that era. My cooling pad died beforehand, which was probably the cause of the temperature rising. Yep, that burning rubber smell coming from the exhaust vents was sort of the giveaway that something was wrong, along with the weird wing ding characters that the display was putting up and the intense heat on the keyboard that suddenly developed. Sadly, it was out of warranty. I really loved that PC, too.

Anyway, I would like to remove the hard drive that's inside to reclaim the data using an external hard drive enclosure but I need to know what size or form factor the hard drive is in order to buy the appropriate enclosure. I'm assuming that its a 2.5 inch form factor. Is that correct?

Many thanks,

Bob

Yes it is 2.5 inch. You can just buy SATA TO USB adapter :

Thank you!

How's this for weird - the darned thing just turned on! It actually went through a recovery set, which at no time previously would it do. The screen is actually in English, not some strange wing ding characters or Chinese, which it was in when the overheating issue first killed it.

Anyway, that ozone/burning odor is still around so I'm taking the opportunity to back things up again while I can. Wow, talk about weirdness.

Have you been doing regular cleaning up of air vents so that dust & debris clogged up there get dusted off?

May be changing fan/heat sink could help you.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, I do blow out the vents for dust and such. Very strange behavior from a PC.

Oh well, problem "solved" with the purchase of a new Envy. THe old one will be used as a traveling/junk PC until it gives up the ghost.
