I got this new laptop, Pavillion g6 1313ax, a few days back. It has windows 7 home basic 64 bit preinstalled on it. Now I wish to install linux on it, as windows is unable to serve all my needs. I tried out several distributions, but was unable to install any of them. Cause whenever I boot from the disc to start installation, the display flikers once & then goes black. After every failed attempt like this, the comp had to be force shut by holding down the power button. I need to have linux on this for my ease of work, in fact any OS with a KDE desktop & decent work power will do!

The last distro I tried is the OpenSUSE 12.1 x86_64, which is one of the latest OS available right now. but that failed like many other. Can anyone help me out with that? Thanks in advance if you try.....!!

Hi,

Have you tried Sabayon linux? Sabayon has nvidia, ati and intel graphics drivers built in the system..

Asus ROG STRIX G16 Manjaro Xfce
HP Touchpad provided by HP
HP Microserver Gen8 10TB Debian Server

The perfect linux distro is the one you like....and that works well on your computer.

If you get a blank screen there is probably an issue with the recognition of the graphics card. Quite common issue on computers with dual GPU's (switchable graphics). Try disabling one of them in BIOS and see if your linux installation works better. Later you can try enable it in BIOS and probably have to blacklist the other one in linux using failsafe mode (assuming you again get a blank screen).

Some distros have textmode installers so you can do all configuration manually without fancy graphics during installation process.

Did the linux distros you tried work fine from live-CD/USB but fail during install? A live-CD/USB is usually a good way to test a linux distro before installling to make sure the look and feel suits the needs. And to check how well it support the hardware in your computer.

I tried it, whole lotta bugs. Any other choice? I was tryin' OpenSuSE lately? I did installed it, but no graphics driver. GNOME is failing. How do I Install the driver?

Try opensuse 12.1. I've somehow managed to install it. But not that satisfactory. I'm still tryin' for newer ways to solve the probs. Let me know when you get it.

Follow the above link to download it as per your taste. There's some choices.

Or if you have to use ubuntu, then download the altenative version

Have installed;

                          ubuntu

                          linux mint 13

                          solusos

all installed with a little help i.e. no backlight activated needs loading with grub bootloader.

If screen goes black press F3 for increased brightness.

best solution for me is adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="acpi_osi=Linux" to /etc/default/grub then update grub. still starts dark but brightness keys work. it is kernel issue not the operating system.

Hope its of some help.
