Hello HP Support, I am experiencing a recurring issue with my HP Stream 2 laptop charging indicator. The laptop itself works perfectly fine. It powers on normally, the battery works, and there are no performance problems. However, whenever I leave the laptop plugged in after reaching full charge (100%), the charging indicator starts blinking white continuously. The blinking does not stop even if: - I unplug the charger - Shut down the laptop - Turn the laptop off completely The white light keeps blinking continuously until I perform certain reset methods. This is not the first time this has happened. Previously, I was able to temporarily fix the issue using methods such as: - Uninstalling battery drivers - Disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery connector - Fully draining the battery to 0% until the laptop powers off - Holding the power button for around 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery These methods used to stop the blinking and return the laptop to normal temporarily. However, the issue now returns immediately after restarting the laptop. For example, the 60-second reset may stop the blinking temporarily, but once I restart the system, the blinking white light starts again. Additional details: - Orange light appears when actively charging - White blinking usually starts after the battery reaches full charge or is left plugged in for a long time - The battery percentage currently stays around 95–100% - The laptop itself still functions normally I would appreciate guidance on whether this may be: - an Embedded Controller (EC) issue, - BIOS/firmware problem, - charging controller issue, - or battery communication problem. Please also advise whether a BIOS update or EC reset procedure is recommended for this model. Thank you.

Hi @Zayyad6087,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for providing such a detailed description of the issue. Since the notebook continues to operate normally and the battery charges and discharges as expected, but the white charging LED continues blinking even after unplugging the adapter and shutting the system down, this points more toward a firmware, Embedded Controller (EC), battery communication, or charging management issue rather than a conventional battery failure.

A few checks may help isolate the cause:

1. Perform an Embedded Controller Reset
If your model has a non-removable battery:

  1. Power off the notebook.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 20-30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the adapter and start the notebook.

Since you've already performed similar resets, let us know whether the behavior changes at all after this procedure.

2. Check for BIOS Updates
Please verify the current BIOS version installed on the notebook.

If a newer BIOS is available for your HP Stream model, installing it may address charging indicator or battery communication issues. If the problem began after a recent BIOS update, please let us know the BIOS version currently installed.

3. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
Please run the battery diagnostics:

  1. Turn off the notebook.
  2. Power it on and repeatedly tap F2.
  3. Open Component Tests > Power > Battery.
  4. Run the battery test and share the results.

4. Verify Battery Status in Windows
Please confirm:

  • What is the battery health reported in HP Hardware Diagnostics?
  • Does Windows ever display "Plugged in, not charging" or any battery-related notifications?
  • Does the blinking white LED occur only after reaching 100%, or does it also occur when the battery remains at 95-99% while plugged in?

5. Check the Charging Adapter
If available, test with another known-good HP adapter that meets the notebook's specifications. This can help rule out an adapter communication issue.

Additional Information Requested
To better understand the issue, please provide:

  • The exact HP Stream model number.
  • Current BIOS version.
  • Battery test results from HP Diagnostics.
  • Whether the blinking occurs while the notebook is powered on, powered off, or both.
  • Whether the charging LED begins blinking immediately after reaching full charge or only after remaining connected for an extended period.

Given that disconnecting and reconnecting the internal battery temporarily clears the condition, but it returns after a restart, the behavior does suggest that the EC firmware, charging controller, or battery status communication may not be resetting correctly. The additional information above will help determine whether this can be resolved through firmware updates or if the notebook requires hardware evaluation.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
