My wireless router now has a 5G network that is available to connect to. My iphone and mac laptop connect fine to the network but my HP laptop cannot find the 5G network. Any idea why? Thanks!

Hi:

Most likely your notebook only has a single band (2.4 GHz) wireless card.

Hardly any dv6 notebooks came with dual band wireless cards.

If you let me know what model wlan card your notebook has, I will confirm for you that it is only a dual band card.

The most likely reason is that your laptop wifi adaptor does not support the 5Ghz band, only the 2.4Ghz band. Not all 'N' adaptors support 5Ghz.

Determine if your computer has 5Ghz band capability

Do you mean to say 5 Ghz instead of 5G?

5G is a mobile network specification whereas 5 GHz is a frequency that is used. the other commonly used band is 2.4 GHZ.

It would help if you identified your notebook with its complete product name or number. We need to see if your notebook is 5 GHz capable or not. If it is no, then you will only be able to see and use the 2.4 GHZ band. The newer iphone and mac laptops are 5 GHx capable. Older notebooks are generally not 5 GHz capable.

Help us to help you by posting the following information.

1.  The complete Model Name. or Product Number. of the notebook - see This HP web document if you don't how to locate the model number and\or product number.

Hi:

According to the parts list for your notebook at the link below, it has a Realtek 8188GN PCIe Half MiniCard (HMC) WiFi adapter - 802.11b/g/n 1x1 wireless card.

http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?SearchText=A6Y00UA

That is a single band (2.4 GHz) card only.

Hint:  Anytime you see a wireless card description with a suffix of bgn, that means it is a single band (2.4 GHz) only card.

A dual band card has a suffix of abgn or agn.

You can confirm that the parts list is correct by going to the device manager, click to expand the Network Adapters category and there you will find the name and model number of the ethernet adapter and wireless card listed.

You're very welcome.

You could buy a USB 5Ghz compatible wifi adapter.

Here's one example:

Edimax Dual-Band USB Adapter
