OK.
in a manner of speaking, you went offshore without a life vest.
Order the USB recovery media from HP.

That is not possible. If I bought windows 10 on disc and used that as recovery media, would that work?
Today I was trying to use the "refresh" option from recovery manager and I got the message "the disc where windows is installed is locked, unlock the disc to proceed" or something like that. what does it mean? how do I "unlock" the disc?

A locked disk can be a real hassle. There are many things you will have to do to repair an issue like that one.
My own preference is to remove the disk put it in an enclosure to get all important data from it.
Here is an article on it.

Once that is done, reinstall the OS and all software that was on the original drive.

Thanks. My question was, can I use windows 10 as 'recovery media' even if the os installed was 8.1?
For the locked disk, Ill have to look into it. how can i remove the hard disk from a laptop? that sounds beyond my capabilities.
