I have a wireless router right next to me (Netgear WN2000RPTv2) which the password isn't working for. I'm trying to connect using the WPS button, but I don't know how to do that on my computer (an HP ProBook 4530s). I tried following the instructions here - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01747962 but they were unhelpful. I pressed the Wireless button on my computer but all it seemed to do was turn on and off the Wireless functionality.

Would love any help that you can give me! Thanks!

Hi - when you say the password isn't working, are you saying you do not remember what it is or is the router broken in some way? Computers don't typically have WPS buttons. If you forgot the password you might be able to retrieve it from some other device which is connected wirelessly to your router, or worst case, log into the router and enter a new password. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the super quick response! I'm not 100% sure - I just moved into a house where some other friends were living. They gave me the password, which I typed in exactly as they wrote down, and it doesn't let me connect - giving the error that "Windows was unable to connect to NetworkName." I'm going to double check the password that they wrote down tonight, but in the meantime I thought that you could use the WPS button on the router to connect to a computer somehow? Or is that just for phones? (If not, what is the purpose of the WPS button on the router?)

Could you also give me a link to instructions on how to log into the router and enter a new password?

Thanks for the super quick response!

Here's a link to your router, http://support.netgear.com/product/WN2000RPTv2. And http://pcsupport.about.com/od/netgear-default-passwords/a/wnr2000-default-password.htm.

For WPS to work, a device needs to be set into a "listening" mode and then the WPS buttong on the router would initiate sending network security info and credentials to the device. Yes, most mobile devices will support this, but not PC's.

As for the password your friends gave you, assuming it is correct, you would probably need the security protocol they set on the router, i.e. WEP, WPA, WPA2, Personal or Enterprise, etc.

Can you connect a different device to that router? If so, you might be able to extract the info you need from there.

Or depending on the OS, if you can see the router from the OS, you can try to connect to it from there and it will figure out the security protocol for you. You would just need to enter the password.
