Hi, I had this problem also but if you read all the post you understand actually the only solution is to install the f12 button driver and go back to windows 7 bios F0A or older. Hope this can help.

they cant reply us in such a way because they have certified after vigorous testing that all laptops and desktops purchased acter october 2011 will be able to work on widows 8...if that goes wrong then they have to pay for it because there are many have up-graded to windows 8 after that certification

So the solution according to susa84 is to install de BIOS from W7 and the new F12 driver? That works? Is that doable on W8?

OK. To be honest, I have somehow succedeed to reestablish working Fn+F12 Wireless and Airplane mode.

I have installed all the new updates, also the new F12 update, then enabled the airplane mode and then I have reset the machine (HP635) like shutdown, then disconnecting battery and power and by pressing and holding power button for 30 sec's.

Then I have entered the setup with only mains connected (no battery at the time), did reset to defaults in BIOS settings, saved the settings and rebooted the comp. Voila, comp. came back up and when I went to computer settings/Airplane mode, I had also functioning switch for wireless. I switched the wireless on, the Blutooth on and then I enabled and disabled airplane mode - it was working.

After that, I reconnected battery with working comp. Then I disconnected mains power supply, rebooted and it still worked, Then I shutdown the comp and switched it back on while on battery - it still works.

So, right now it is still working, I just disabled active keys in BIOS so as to be forced to use Fn+F12 to switch airplane mode on or off.

But it still is a silly mistake with no proper explanation.

OK I think I am a bit late here, but that's because I just had this problem. Tried to turn WiFi on after turning it off using the F12 button, but the light remained orange and nothing happened. I panicked and did half a dozen of restarts before realizing that something has been altered.

So I went to Control Panel > Device Manager, and under Network Adapters section, the Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter had an exclamation mark on its icon, which means it was disabled. All I did was right-click and enable, and everything was working again. If there is an Unknown or Disabled Device, then the section in the Device Manager list is expanded, and in this case it was, so you can easily tell if there is something wrong.

Hope this helps (because if it doesn't then you are in for some real fresh-install type trouble), although I think this solution has been figured out.

Thanks & regards

actually there is no such adaptor installed ii. dont see any raylink adaptor in hte device manager..i see that 2 drivers i.e raylink and bluetooth drivers are not getting installed on my pc..after upgrading my laptop when i tried to install it says please connect the device and try again and so on...and so it says there is no device  connected,,and even i have found that sometimes both suddenly work ;they get switched on and off in wireless in pc settings using mouse..after sometime or after a restart they go gray..what i feel is there is a loose connection in my hardware..can anybody please explain what type of problem i am facing..???is that a driver problem or my hardware connection problem..?

So has anyone figured out the solution yet?

I discovered the problem today and am so relieved I'm not the only one.  Same as described - F12 stays on orange, Wi-Fi under PC Settings is grayed-out.  Computer is dv6t-7000 product #A5F76AV.  Purchased September 2012 and wireless had been working flawlessly with Windows 7 Pro.

Upgraded to Win 8 Pro a couple of weeks ago, but have been using wired LAN connection until today.  All drivers are current including addition of driver for wireless button.  Upgraded to newer BIOS today.

The ONLY way it works is to go to Settings/Power and put the computer in sleep mode.  I then hit the wake button which causes F12 to go to white, and the Wi-Fi toggle under PC Settings is no longer grayed out.  I can toggle back and forth and it works correctly.

However, if I restart or reboot, I'm back to F12 on steady orange with Wi-Fi grayed out.  I repeat the sleep/wake solution and it works again.  A bit annoying, but at least I can travel with my laptop now.

This does NOT sound like a hardware problem to me - but BIOS or driver.

Regarding my last post outlining the problem - it boils down to this question: What does the code do differently waking up the computer versus booting the computer?

Regarding the workaround of putting the laptop in sleep mode and then waking it up, did you installed the F12 button driver that makes the F12 button toggle airplane on or off prior to doing this workaround? It doesnt work for me.
