The laptop is 1 1/2 year old with two year warranty. dv7t -6b00 CTO Quad Edition (QJ793AV#AVA) Came with Windows 7 64-bit installed but HP sales tech stated it was qualified for Win8 Upgrade. And HP Support site qualified the laptop was Windows 8 ready. Thus upgraded with Win8 w/ Media Center 64-bit in December 2013. Installed all the Windows 8 drivers and BIOS upgrade provided at HP Support site for my model. Can you please explain why the F12 key LED no longer toggles orange to white when turning off the wifi radio with the F12 key and now no longer shows the airplane icon in system tray when toggling the key? What exactly does "Airplane mode" do on my model anyway? Thanks.

My product number is: B7R54EA#ACQ. it is a Pavilion dv7-7120ei. Wireless is Inten Centrin N2230.

The machine came with Windows 7 Home Premium installed. There were flyers and stuff in the store and with the machine encouraging buyers to upgrade to Windows 8 as soon as it became available. This was last year in October.

I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit three weeks ago and it has been nothing but trouble since then.

In addition to the wireless issue, the printer drivers (Office jet 4500) will make the printer put paper through, but it always comes out blank.

Many thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

Unfortunately, this does not solve my problem. I have updated various drivers, enabled, unenabled, installed, reinstalled all sorts of attempts to fix the problem. There were even forum suggestions about closing the lid, re-doing the BIOS and more. I am reasonably sure I have tried all of them more than once and in many different combinations.

Nothing works. The issue is a fundamental one to the internal workings of the HP and the incompatibility with upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

It sill amazes me that HP just could not be bothered to engage on this and offer to fix it. I am sure they will come up with something in a month or so -- just when the warranty expires. It is strange to treat your customers this way when your company is losing market share in a market that is already declining.

I would have to hand over my machine for some days to a desktop services professional (at my own cost, this is a private machine) to delete everything, reformat drives and take the installation back to Windows 7. I am not confident enough, nor do I have the time, to follow the detailed instructions to do this that one can find online. It seems you run the risk of totally messing up your drives and also deleting everything that was built in to this particular model.

In the meantime, I have bought a wireless USB dongle that connects just fine. It is a poor substitute on a machine that is quite expensive, but at least it works.

The only option that worked for me was to boot into the bios and enable wireless device as it was disabled..Everything works fine now but the side effect is that the f12 button is constantly on a blue light even though I turn off the bluetooth or wifi.

NOTE: when you enable wireless via bios you have to go to pc settings in the metro ui to enable wireless device too.

Thank you also for posting here. I have tried doing the BIOS thing previously, and have now tried it again. Still not working.

However, I would prefer to have your problem of the blue light always on rather than the orange light always on!!

You don't understand the problem of the problem... There is no option for wireless even when Airplane mode is off. It's still grey. Can't toutch it.

Isn't it bigger problem if it stucks to orange? 😄
