blue screen and a clicking noise

a few days ago my hp laptop said that it was running some updates so i put it to the side and let it complete the updates. It then tried to load but instead of going to the usual homescreen it came up with a blue screen with a light shinning down and is making a clicking noise, the cursor is on the screen but it looks magnified. I tried turning my laptop off and the same screen came up. after reading advice on the internet i tried pressing the f8 button to get the list of options, i have tried all of them and they all result in again going to the blue screen.

I really need this computer as it has all my university work on for my dissertation and i stupidly never saved it any where else.

please help!

Hi:

It sounds like the hard drive may be going out or it already has.

At this point you may want to see if you can copy your files off the hard drive but you need to purchase a hard drive enclosure.

You take the hard drive out of the PC, put it in the enclosure, plug the enclosure into a USB port on another PC and hope you can see your files on your hard drive. If you can, then you can copy them off and at least you can save all of your work.

I need to know what model PC you have, so I can recommend the right hard drive enclosure for you.

i dont know what make it is i will try and find out.

i did a start up test and  got this on the screen:-

I'm afraid the wound to the hard drive is mortal.

Below is the link to the hard drive enclosure that would work for your hard drive.

You have to understand that it may not work because the hard drive may be too far gone but for $17.00, it may be worth the gamble.

I have found out that my hard drive died so I have replaced the hard drive and now the computer is saying "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"

Could some one please help as I need my computer as im in the middle of finishing my dissertation!

Hi:

You need to reload the operating system. 

Did you use your recovery disks?

If all you did was replace the hard drive it is blank and that is why the notebook won't boot up.

No i never used the recovery disk as I dont have one asnd one bever came with the computer? How would I get hold of one? Thank you for your reply

Hi:

I do not see recovery disks listed for your model in the USA.

I did see them at the UK website (outside vendor that HP uses to sell recovery disks outside of the US and Canada.

Another thing you can do if you don't want to shell out 32 quid, is to do the following...or you can order the disks, and do the following until your recovery disks arrive.

Try this workaround:

If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.

Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.

Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.

The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.

Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
