It is tough for me to see what the keys are (I am not a touch typist).

Is there any way I can further etch out or scrape wider the key to better illuminate them in both bright and dark settings?

Hi @realityintrudes,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. It is a great place to find the help you need, from other users, HP experts, and other support personnel. I see from the post that you are having issues with the backlit keyboard light. Don't worry, we'll work together to find a solution for you,

Some of the known issues have occurred after a BIOS update as the keyboard backlighting turns off.

I'm not sure if you did a BIOS update, but if you have - pressing F5 will turn it back on.

Link to update the Bios: Click here

If your notebook computer has a backlit keyboard, there is a special key on the keyboard to turn the light on and off. Use the backlight in dim lighting situations.

Please go through this link: Click here

Press and hold the Fn key and the press the dedicated key couple of times which would help to increase and decrease the brightness of the backlit keyboard.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Keep me posted,

If the information I've provided was helpful,

give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,

that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!

Good Luck.

The issue is not the backlighting- that is fine.  The light through the individual keys is inconsistent- as if some keys (like the W, period and comma) were not etched deep enough to allow the backlight to shine through enough. I had an Acer before this and the backlit keys were much easier to read in any circumstance.

If I take a fine knife or something, can I trace over the existing key etching (ie, dig into them deeper with the blade) and make them brighter... or will I screw them up.

Hi @realityintrudes,

Thank you for replying,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

I understand the issue is with individual keys, so I would suggest you try to clean the keyboard with a soft lint cloth which should help you to resolve this issue.

Answering to your question, on using a fine knife, HP does not recommend doing so, however, you can try this at your own discretion.

I hope this answers your question, Let me know if you need any further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help.

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,
