Hi guys,

I bought an HP Mini 210 at an estate sale. There is no system recovery partition on it, so I need to reinstall Windows from a flash drive. I think the computer came with Windows 7 and the previous owner wiped it and installed Windows XP on it instead, blowing away the recovery partition in the process.

So I just created a bootable USB flash drive and dumped a Windows XP installation into the root of the drive. Now, how do I get the HP Mini to boot to the USB drive. I gotta assume I need to get into CMOS setup, but then is there an option for this?

Thanks!

Hi,

Please put the USB thumbdrive into a USB port.  Press the power button try tapping the F9 key.

Regards.

Well I tried going into CMOS setup and my 3 alternative boot choices are USB Floppy, USB CD/DVD ROM, and USB Diskette on Key/USB Hard Drive. I tried all 3 of these but keep getting "BOOTMGR is missing".

I used DISKPART to wipe the flash drive, then create a primary partition on it, made it active and formatted it with NTFS. Then copied all of the files from a Windows CD to the root of the flash drive. So how do I get BOOTMGR onto the flash drive so it's bootable? And which of the 3 boot choices do I select?

Thanks!

Hi,

No, you have to INSTALL Windows from the DVD or BUILD a bootable thumb drive from the DVD. COPY contents from DVD to the thumb drive won't work. Please use the following information to create the thumb drive.

Hi, and thanks for the help.

First of all, the link in that article to download the tool from Microsoft does not work.

Second, I want to make the USB drive a Windows XP bootable, the tool you pointed me to is only for WIndows 7.

I went to Microsofts website to search if there is a similar tool for Windows XP. I can't find one.  I have a Windows XP.iso image as well.

Assuming the USB drive has been partitioned and formatted correctly using DISKPART, is there another way to put that ISO image onto the USB drive so it will be bootable? For instance, can I use IMGBURN to copy the ISO image to the USB drive? Will that work?

Thanks for all of your help!!
