dv6t-3000 RAM Upgrade

It seems like the retailer is letting me return the modules (looks like I'll eat shipping though).  Could have been worse.

No I do not!  You are sure that the three suggestions you posted are all low-density?  Any particular brand preference among the three?

Yeah, any of those will work. I've used them all, depending on who was the cheapest at the time.

The one I like best is the G.Skill. I use that memory all the time.

You can't go wrong with any of them though.

Another thing you can do is to run the free Crucial memory scan tool, and buy the memory they pick for you right then and there. 

They guarantee compatibility.

Yea, I used crucial to upgrade the memory in my Dell XPS 8500 and everything worked smoothly.  The crucial memory scanner for my HP dv6t-3000 said that they have no compatible memory upgrades (but they list upgrades for dv6-30xx models).  This seemed strange to me, but perhaps they are correct?

That is strange. I would think any of the chips suggested for the other dv6-3xxx models would be the same.

The Crucial memory on NewEgg was rated at 1.35V and as I said, that may or may not work.

That may be the reason why Crucial doesn't have a recommendation for your specific model.

Yes it is strange, my best guess is that it has something to do with the notebook being CTO.  Sometimes it says it is dv6-3000, sometimes dv6t-3000, and I am not exactly sure what the difference is.  The crucial system scanner does say the RAM can be upgraded from 4gb to 8gb, so I suppose the other brands with the higher power consumptions might work.

I have no doubt in my mind that any of the three I posted will work in your PC.

I would be floored if you told me any of them didn't.

The difference in models I believe, is some dv6-3000's have AMD hardware, and yours has the Intel hardware --  the t stands for intel when you have a CTO, and a z stands for AMD when you have a CTO.

Hi Paul,

I've popped in the G-Skill memory you recommended and it is working flawlessly!  The computer booted into Windows without a hitch.  I am convinced it was this high-density/low-density stuff.   (It's I3 vs. the I7 I have in my desktop makes it unbearable slow (relatively...I am spoiled), but at least now with the added memory I can use it more easily for work when I am traveling.)

This serves as a good lesson to others: spend the extra $20-$30 and make sure you know what you are getting!
