I made an account just to say thank you to the OP. My dad just told me he had this 90B fan error this morning, googled it and this thread popped up. Used my DatVac cleaner in the vents, saw some dust fly out, and no more fan error!
Thank you so much pharma, I'm sorry you had to go through hoops and crap but I am happy you provided a lot of people, and myself, an easy fix to this problem. Thank you from both my father and I.

I had the same problem with HP Mini 210-1012 : Cooling fan error (902), forced shut down.
Although the fan was working properly...
My solution : I removed CMOS battery for a while, to provoke BIOS reset.
Then, it worked again !

Hi guys,

Im a girl with not a lot of experience of computers, I know a bit but for example that BIOS thing... what do I need to do with that?
My Computer sys exacrly the same and wont give me a chance to go furhter than a black screeb with bla bla bla overheating fan (902) AND ENTER - SHUTDOWN
PFF JOY!
Maybe a stupid question but should I just blow on the back of my computer? Or do I need to do smth special? Vacuum?
My fan is really quiet now... not a good sigh because when it worked 'normal' i always heared my fan now its not even working''
I have it for more then three yeras, maybe its just dead 🙂
But I really need my stuff thats on the computer
Can please somebody help me?

Hi Ella,
It seems that hp made a poor design in terms of cooling on there laptops and in 5 years they still sell laptops that have the same cooling problems, what you can do:
1. goto the hp support site, and do the BIOS update, for me this worked some time to get/keep it running far better then i did before. (search updates trough serie number or model to be sure u have the right ones)
2. blow trough all the holes on the bottom and the 1 on the side with the cooling ribs. if you are lucky this will move the fan a bit and allow it to restart.
3. if 2 dint work remobe he battery and power cable and hold the powerbutton a good 20 secs or more. this will do a reset.
4. if all else fails get the vacume cleaner out and just try to get as much air movement you can inside the laptop remove a panel on the bottom if possible. with mine you cant. (the fan is on the left side under your A key)
moving it with a pin is dificult on the newer models since they dont allow direct access to the fan.
if all this fail im sorry to say you will have to bring it in for cleaning/repair or it you are a bit courages open up the casing yourself and check for dust, it does not need to come apart completely you only need some freedom for the left side of the "keyboard pannel to have a peek"
for me it is the 2nd time i have the problem. i make my 1 year old laptop work hard with games and such. so i guess i am one of the 1st to encounter this problem. i still have waranty but i dont even feel like bringing it in anymore because all they will do is clean/replace your fan and make it run, after 2 months later your probem will be back. i can do this at home in 15 minutes, dont need a tech to do it and wait for 2/3 weeks with no laptop.
needless to say im done with poor design hp laptops. next time ill google a bit before i buy something instead of trusting a brand name.

To get to the meat of what I'm saying, jump to the bottom, for an entertaining journey there at HP's expense, continue reading by all means...
I was actually looking for some other info when I came across this page and just thought I'd add my two cents... Keep in mind that I have over 25 years of working in the IT/Systems/Network Support Industry and have more letters after my name than 2 Chinese alphabets written in Greek (aka, this isn't my first rodeo)...
Now don't get confused either, I honestly believe that HP has become the greatest marketing company in the world, meaning all they want to do is just sell you another poorly supported horrible lookalike paperweight of some lower mediocre manufacturers technojunk they are selling with an HP sticker glued on it... Or of course pushing that killer $90/hr support for all the not covered by warranty support issues that comes with the industry leading "pay in advance non refundable best effort guarantee of a half ass workaround they rebranded as "a solution"...
Hint: Before paying for any such mumbo jumbo witchtrickery for any HP Printer, do yourself a favor and browse through Canon's website for the same issue on any similar looking (or exactly looking even) unit and you'll probably find the answer you need easily and clearly posted there...
So now that we're more than clear where this author is coming from, this is like the "parallel dimension of whoa I never seen that coming holy sh!t smack ouch that's funny and is leaving a mark oh well serves them right anyways what was it was doing originally **bleep** it it just wasted 20 minutes and now I'm clueless what I was working on over an HP squirrel with glitter in it's tail...
My point is, this is a very rare circumstance where HP actually has stepped up to the plate so far as any fly by night white box manufacturer shipping via ePackets and they posted a pretty good starting point for this type of error that pretty much condenses these 6 pages of posting saying the same thing... And finally, right here it is all condensed:
Rarest of Rare Worthwhile & Free HP Support for one of they're future class action settlement poster...
But yeah, they still deserve the flogging all the same for being such a worthless company anyway, so by all means, continue with this thread...
