I have had my laptop for almost a year, but recently it has started crashing due to Kernel Power - thats what it says in the event logs anyway.
I dont know what is causing this, and I can't find my receipt from the shop I bought it from to get them to fix it because it should still be under warrenty.
The laptop gives me the dreaded Blue Screen Of Death when it crashes and it happens at least once a day, sometimes it will crash when I'm not even doing anything.
I'm not sure if it is hardware or software related though.
I dont mind doing a clean install of win 7 if the problem is software related though

Hi,
The short Disk Self Test ( DST ) error code would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced. This is also consistent with the kernel power event error you've been getting.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the full Model No. and Product No. of the notebook - see Here for a further explanation.

Hi,
Shut down the notebook. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu. Select the Bios option ( usually f10 ) and under the Advanced or Diagnostic tab you should find the facility to run tests on both the Hard Drive and Memory. Post back with the details of any error messages.
If both the above tests pass, try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'. In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, click Computer, left click Local Disc C once to highlight it, right click Local Disc C and select Properties. Click the Tools tab and then click the button to 'Check the Drive for Errors'. In the following window make sure both boxes are ticked and then click Start. Agree to schedule the check at the next system restart and then restart the notebook - this process can take several hours to complete before loading back into Windows.
Also, you can check if your notebook is still under warranty with HP Here.
Regards,
DP-K
