Hi,

In that case, you may be able to use windows system restore to return the machine to a point in time before this syskey prompt occured using the following method.

Use another PC to create a Windows 7 Repair CD.  Download the ISO file from the link below.

Windows 7 64bit

You should use an application such as ImgBurn ( Note: you may want to de-select the additional software options during the installation of ImgBurn ) to burn the ISO to a CD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here.

Once created, tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.

Insert the Repair CD.

Select the Boot Manager option ( f9 ).  Use the arrow keys to highlight the CD/DVD drive and hit enter - if you're prompted to 'Press any key to continue.....', do so.

Select the 'Repair your Computer' option and follow Option 2 in the guide Here to run Windows System Restore - choose a restore point at least 48 hours before the log-on issue occurred.

Regards,

@hpg44

If you're referring to the same halt code you posted yesterday, then restart the notebook and enter:  43758227

HPG.

That looks like a SYSKEY password.

Did you allow someone to remote login to your laptop lately???

HPG.

Most people do not even know that this is on there system.

In what has been called the technical support scam, criminals phone unsophisticated computer users, most of whom use Windows, and persuade the victim to allow the criminal to remotely control the computer, often trying to persuade the user that the computer is in need of software maintenance which the caller will provide on payment by credit card. In many cases the syskey program is used to lock the computer, either to extort a payment to unlock it, or as a malicious act towards a victim who does not pay.If an unencrypted SAM cannot be found, the computer cannot be unlocked, although files can be retrieved by booting from a CD.

Hi,

I'd completely agree with Reo's assesment - one possible way to at least retrieve your files would be to boot from an Ubuntu CD as detailed in the link below.
