In the end I had to get a new keyboard.  Anything I tried worked for a couple of times and then nothing.  So get it repaired.  It is a fault in the keyboard and not a particularly expensive repair.  Thanks to all who offered suggestions.

Greetings @bobet

Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.

I understand that you are facing an issue with your computer where some of the keys are working.

Don't worry, I will be glad to help.

Have you tried any troubleshooting steps on your own?

Was there any liquid spill on the computer?

May I know the product number of your computer? Click here for assistance.

Please run a component test on the keyboard. (This would let us know if the issue is hardware or software)

You could also check with an external keyboard. (USB keyboard.)

Recommend you to turn off the computer.

Turn the computer ON and keep tapping F2 or ESC on startup and enter System diagnostics. Click here for assistance.

If the keyboard test pass.

Restart the computer and open device manager by doing a right-click on the Windows button.

Uninstall keyboard drivers, delete the driver when prompted.

Restart the computer and check.

If the test fails, please replace the keyboard or contact our phone support for the service options.

For other troubleshooting steps, refer to this HP Article

You can also use the interactive test available in HP Support Assistant. Click here to know more.

Let me know if this helped.

If the information I've provided was helpful,

That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!

Good Luck.

I had this problem after I had re-assembled an HP laptop (including the keyboard). It must be that g, h and backspace are all on one line of the keyboard because when I replugged the keyboard into the motherboard it all worked again.
