Build in some support fold down legs on the bottom back side of the laptops so it gets better air flow for the fan.

Like on desk top key boards. Heating was no where as bad when the cooling fans were on the back of the lap tops..

I just bought a new notebook a week ago, and the battery is only lasting an hour and it over heats like crazy that you cant put it on the lap its a dv6 and i dissappointed that this is the last hp product il have before it burns my laps or starts a fire.... Such a dissapointment

I had (note the word had) a HP dv9702ea.  The fan was on constantly as a result of over heating.  On Saturday the graphics card burnt out and took the motherboard with it.

Talking to an expert, this heat issue has been recognised as a recall in the US but that recall has never been extended to the UK.  No idea why it was not extended to the UK.

The cost of a new motherboard and graphics card and the labour to install has seen me order a new laptop today, and it is not an HP.

Very disappointing given the old machine was only 2 years old.

an AMD guy tell me to enable PowerPlay, then choose

Maximize Battery for both plugged in and on battery.

It seems much better now.

My DV200 gets so hot it burns anything it sits on.  Also I am told the NVIDEA card is to blame. Everyone knows about this but apparently i am told by hp my dv2000 doesn't come into this.  The battery is rubbish I have to keep it plugged into the elec all the time. The fan makes a massive noise and I felt like it was going to blow up. Well guess what it has!

I am one of these "Die-hard" XP users and had overheating and short battery life problems with the HP HDX-16 (bought in June 2009) in the beginning - so for those still using XP, it might be of interest.

After some googling around, I found out that the CPU-Usage info displayed in the XP Task-Manager says actually nothing about the current speed or frequency the Processor-Cores are running at.

Following http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305610 I used the XP System Monitor to find out more about the actual current processor frequency (add new counter - Perfomance Object: ProcessorPerfomance - Processor Frequency) and a few other interesting things:

845i269C50CCB6AFD151

Using one of the XP Standard Powerschemes (Home/Office) the Processor kept running at full speed - regardless of the CPU workload.

Only for a few of the Standard Power Schemes is the Frequency allowed to adjust as per CPU workload.

It gets even more interesting when you run on Batteries !

Suddenly the  "Portable/Laptop" Scheme keeps the Processor running at full speed whereas the Home/Office Scheme now allows for adjustable Frequency in accordance with CPU workload.

Somehow -at least in XP- there seem to be some incompatibilties in the HAL Layer.

After playing around a littlemore with Power-Scheme settings, I still have 2 schemes in place: one for plugged-in and one for running on Batteries.

I could not find or create a Scheme which allows for adjustable Frequencies in both cases "plugged-in" and "on battery".

So a manual switch remains necessary - but my HP thanks me for the switch with a cool "lap" and a remarkably extended battery life.

Would be interesting to know if this problem is limited to XP only ?

Btw - don't play around too much with the Power Schemes - they become quickly corrupted and require more googling around and a registry fix...

DV9000 series have the same issue as other DV series with the NVIDIA chip overheating and disconnecting from the MOBO but HP wont admit it.

See for yourself the number of posts/forums etc on the web

Meant to say that the DV9500 series has this issue, my DV9657EM is now a paper weight
