Hello colinzim. You will need to contact HP Customer Support or take the notebook to an HP Authorized Repair Center to get rid of this error. Contact them at 1-800-474-6836 if you're in the US/Canada. Go to HP's support site if you need contact information for another region.
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"
Click the "Accept as Solution" button if I resolve your issue.

Why,if the computer is yours out of warranty, and not really an HP problem any more. I have been repairing and rebuilding laptops many years. This HP g7-1019wm is the only one to have such nonsense in mother board. I'm sure it's just bing able to access those "missing" lines in the bios. Most others I've replaced just have to be done on 1st boot and everything is fine.I've talked to several HP partners and they didn't have a clue. Even when I offered to pay. Can't some help?

Hello fanta88. I understand you are witness an error declaring a serial number isn't present. To assist you better, I do require the computer model number and the operating system of the computer.
For information on locating the model number, please reference this website: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108
For information on locating the operating system, please reference this website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/which-operating-system
In the meantime, I would like to test the computer hardware, to identify if it is causing the issue. Here is some documentation on how to test the hardware without booting into Windows:
Windows 8: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03467259
Windows 7 and Vista: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01443317
Please respond when you complete the hardware diagnostic. Please provide your results, and the information I requested at the beginning of my post. I look forward to your response.
Mario
