I recently had a problem with my laptop not playing some games properly, so I restarted it but it just stayed in "Restarting" screen, so I powered it off and now the screen is black when I turn it on. I have tried this several times. All I can do is turn on the backlit keyboard, open the DVD tray, but get no display at all. I tried HDMI out to another monitor, but nothing.
I am running Windows 10 and generally speaking, the laptop has not given me problems up to now. I have never had the display not turn on. Any ideas?

Welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the display screen of your HP - Beats Special Edition 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop is completely black.
This could be a hardware issue with the unit.
Let's go through a few steps to resolve this issue.
And here's the step by step guide for you in the link: Computer Does Not Start (Windows 10)
Let me know how this works.
You have a good day ahead.

I went through the steps to determine the problem. Unfortuntately, it recommendend I send laptop to repair center. But the laptop is not worth paying someone else to fix it. So I decided to start with the hard drive, which I removed. My question is: is there anyway to test the unit outside of the laptop? Or do I just go with a replacement and hope that it works? I know my problem could with the memory, or motherboard (but it is definitely not the display) but figure the drive is the most likely culprit and may be corrupted.

Thank you for your reply, I'll be more than glad to help you.
I understand that the issue still persists after following the steps provided in the previous interaction.
This could be an issue with the motherboard. Also, there is no option to test the unit outside of the laptop.
Hence, you may need to contact HP Phone Support for further assistance at the link: www.hp.com/contacthp
