Hello,

Welcome to the HP Support forum.

Generally speaking you can perform an in-place upgrade - from Windows 7 to Windows 8 but it needs to be the same edition (e.g. Windows 7 Pro to Windows 8 Pro). Actually Windows 7 Home edition can upgrade to pure WIndows 8 and all others can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro. Enterprise editions cannot perform any kind of upgrades - just plain installations. Also, note that that must the same edition with regards to 32 or 64 bit Windows.

It seems you have done it right - upgrade installation starts with inserting the installation media and running the Setup.exe  but there seems to be some other problem with the media and the applications cannot start.

Another way to install Windows is by performing clean installation - this starts it over from a clean point and usually erases the data from the disk (or makes a dual boot - both Windows 7 and Windows 😎

What kind of Windows 8 disk is this ?  Do you have a proper license for it ?

If this disc is not working properly (seems to be) and if you have a full license (FPP), you can download the Windows 8.1 ISO image directly from Microsoft web site for free >> here >> https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows8ISO

If you need assistance on how to write or burn the ISO image, let me know and I will post instructions.

Here are detailed instructions about performing installation of MS Windows 8 (both in-place upgrade or clean installation):

Hi yesterday I spoke to a HP personnel and they tried to help me upgrade windows 7 to 8 but to no avail so they are going to ship a new OS windows 8 cd to me.
Can I upgrade to windows 8.1 through that link you provided after my laptop becomes windows 8?

It's great they will send you a new disc.

If it will be pure Windows 8 (no 8.1), you can and should follow these instructions for the upgrade to 8.1  >  http://support.hp.com/rs-en/document/c03847367
