I have had problems with switching users since I purchased this computer 2 years ago. Biggest mistake of my life.
The touch pad is hypersensitive causing cursor to randomly move around the screen and screen goes blank when I switch user.
See there are many issues with these dv7 computers and updated the bios is recommended but I am just an average user and need help
Have returned one HP and would return this computer if I could.
Any help appreciated with this blank screen issue.

You can't just hold down F8 key at boot, you have to tap tap tap tap until it comes up. If you hold down any key at boot it will give you an error long beep as long as you hold the key down. Also try taping F10, gives a menu of options with Safemode as one of them.
I was able to turn off the computer and unplug and remove the battery. Then put the battery back in and plug it in and turn it on. That worked for me. You can also get a DVD/CD Desktop version of Linux from a friend, get into your BIOS setup and change the boot order to CD/DVD first and hard drive 2nd and hit F10 to save and reboot, then put your CD/DVD Desktop Linux disk into the machine and reboot from the DVD/CD rom drive. The select the TRY OPTON (Not Install!) then you can access your files from Linux and save them on a USB drive. From the directory HOME browse down to your user name and then the folder you need. Good Luck! John 🙂

Hello Perez21,
For the screen going black after a restart, are you using the HP Support Assistant to update the necessary drivers? If not, I have included the document 'Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 7, Windows Vista)'. Please follow through the steps for updating your computer. If the update from here still causes the screen to be black after a restart. The next steps that you will need to follow are in the document 'Computer Does not Start (Windows 7, Vista, XP)'
If these steps fail to resolve the issue, I would need to clarify the model number of your computer. Is it the same computer model number as in the title? If not, I have included the document 'Guide to finding your product number'. I would also need to know the version of Windows that you are running. I have included the document 'Which Windows operating system am I running?'.
Thank you.

I have two HP computers one is a few years old and this happened with the black screen so I figured the computer had just given up, I went and bought a new hp and on the second day the same thing happened to the new one. There has to be a problem with hp computers because now I'm using gateway and never a problem with it.
