I think you are good to go for the memory upgrade.

So, now I know that my laptop is expandable up to 16 gb.

The link you provided to  "OWC 16GB (2x 8GB) 1333Mhz PC3-10600 DDR3 SO-DIMM 204-Pin Memory Upgrade Kit" is selling for $124.99.  It's two (2) 8 gigabyte chips.  Gonna do a little research and see if I can find what I need a little cheaper.  If not, I'll go with this bran.  Thanks for all your help!  Please, let me know if there are any more diagnostics I should run and if you can recommend any third party maintenance/clean up programs that I could purchase.

Memory is a bit high right now. You can likely do a little better but make sure the memory is basically the same speed, and density and voltage as the memory I linked to you.
