Have a near new Pavillion dv7 notebook. The mute button on the keyboard stays red (mute) all the time. It flashes red and white on boot-up. then stays red. The button functions ok, just never turns to white to show sound is not muted.

Good luck, I have the same problem with  my pavilion dvt.  There is a recommended bios update on the web site which I installed but did not fix the problem.  So now I'm emailing tech support and I don't think they understand the problem.

I went into a lengthy description of the issue and their reply was for me to uninstall and then install the audio drivers which I did without it affecting the problem.

I wait without much hope  of their response.

Okay did some more research of this issue on this site and found the following:

"OK every one i read some more and i think i found out how to fix the problem with no sound:

1 go to Control Panel

2 go to Device Manager

3 go to Sound, video, and game controllers

4 double click the IDT High Definition Audio CODEC

5 go to Driver on the top of the IDT screen

6 click Roll Back Driver...yes it takes away the most recent update but it worked for me

7 after it is done rolling back go back to the IDT screen and go back to driver and click the Update Driver... button...don't interrupt it let it do a search and update"

Tried this and it works.

What is the problem and how can it be fixed?  Is it a driver problem or is the sound card not working?
