I never had a problem with using my HDMI cable from my TV to watch movies from my laptop.  I don't know if the windows update cause this issue, but when I plug my HDMI cable to my laptop, the screen goes black and the TV does not get signal.

Hi, I had the same problem when I connected hdmi for the first time I selected the "graphics options--> output--> television" at first by right clicking from the desktop. Later I selected "change pc settings" from the charms section and in the devices tab selected add device and while the laptop was searching I connected the hdmi cable to it. Thats how I got the display on the tv.
probably you will have to off both the tv and the laptop first. Then put on tv and select the desired hdmi option before putting on the laptop and pressing the "window logo + p" or "fn +f4" keys. Lets c if this works

With the HDMI connected between the notebook and the external display, hold down the Windows key and tap the "P" key to cycle through the options in presentation mode.

You probably need to choose either  duplicate or external mode to see video on the external display.

Thank you. I found your reply very helpful and was able to connect my laptop to tv

Thank you, I did that and my screen is still black and no signal on TV.

I updated the video driver through HP down load, pressed "windows and P key", selected duplicate and extended.  Still screen is black.

Did this happen after a Windows or HP update?

Are you connecting the HDMI cable to the same port as before?

Have you gone into the HDTV's menu to ensure that the HDMI port you are using is set to Computer or PC?
